Question Céline Dion to perforrm at 2010 Opening Ceremony?

From the Globe & Mail:

Quote:
But impending motherhood may call into question two forthcoming commitments - the opening ceremony of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, where she is booked to perform, and an appearance at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, where she is due to return in June, 2010, headlining in rotation with Bette Midler and Cher. Her spokeswoman, Ms. Blondeau, said yesterday it is not yet clear whether she will now have to cancel those engagements. "It has all happened so fast," she said.

If this is true, well at least she can sing...

Good god, I hope this isn't true. This, toppled with the HST is almost enough to make me move back to Calgary.

It's fun to make fun of her, but, she really is probably the most talented and famous living Canadian. Very few REAL globally recognized music icons are from Canada.

I think she did a fabulous job at the 1996 Summer Olympics where she sang "The Power of Dream"....I still listen to that song~

She's just the safe choice, I guess. She's got a great voice, she's overemotive, and she's tied to Titanic in the minds of billions of people around the globe. She's ubiquitous, she's placid, she's the Enya of the tears-and-beers set.

Certainly nothing will go wrong if Celine Dion performs, but with the list of Canadian talent in music these days punching wayyyyyy above its weight - Stars, Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers (Neko Case's voice could rival just about anything Celine Dion could throw out there) Arcade Fire, Metric, MSTRKRFT. . .and that's just in the genre of music that I personally like.

I guess it comes down to what you want at the opening ceremonies: if you're looking for artists known world wide, then Celine Dion is the way to go and will give a good performance. If you're just looking to showcase Canadian talent, any of the above will be (with maybe the exception of MSTRKRFT) able to blow people out of the water, while giving a glimpse into what the Canadian music and culture scene is like now, rather than what it was like in the mid-90s.

Well, I'm quite sure they wanted big international talent for the opening ceremony....and that's Celine Dion, whether you love her or hate her. Personally, i think she's great...not sure what the whole stampede to run away from her is about.

Opening Ceremonies:

Atlanta 1996 - Celine Dion
Sdyney 2000 - John Farnham, Olivia Newton-John
SLC 2002 - LeeAnn Rimes (not quite world famous, but famous domestically at the time)
Athens 2004 - Bjork (AWFUL!)
Torino 2006 - Peter Gabriel, Luciano Pavoratti
Beijing 2008 - Sarah Brighton
Vancouver 2010 - Celine Dion?

Just because Celine is performing doesn't mean other talent can't be showed as well, but it'll be more in a theatrical mode as that's what the opening ceremonies are. In Sydney, they had Human Nature and Julie Anthony sing the national anthem and of course there was also Nikki Webster.

The closing ceremonies will be the all-out party, and they'll try to get in as many line-ups as possible.

Are we going to get to see Doug Henning levitate the torch flame up to the cauldron also?

LOL

I'm just not a fan, and think we could come up with way better. Someone like Bryan Adams or David Foster would suffice. Both are local artists.

I'm almost certain that Bryan will take part in the opening, closing, and/or medal ceremonies. Actually, he would be most ideal for the all-out concert party that will be the closing ceremonies and he would definitely be ideal for one of the medal ceremonies.

Hell no to David Foster...

I think you summed up my feelings, right there. In fact. . .I think the above is a pretty good arguement for anyone who does OR does not want Celine Dion to be our national representation at the olympics.

Actually, I remember watching the opening of the games in 1996, and being really really impressed with her performance. A friend of mine in the US didn't know who she was (there was a time ), and after she was done he said soemthing to the effect of, "that was the best part of the ceremony right there." It was that impressive.

Is this Globe report even accurate? Is Celine really going to perform at the opening?
