A little (actually a lot) of East Tennessee

The first week in January I went to visit a really good friend of mine who is in Knoxville getting her PhD. I took the opportunity to visit Atlanta for a day and a half, the pictures from which I plan to post soon. I drove up to Knoxville from Atlanta and stopped on the way in Chattanooga and a small town called Athens. Hope you enjoy the photos!

Chattanooga

I came into the city the back way for some reason and wasn't expecting much from what I saw...

But things improved as I made it to downtown.

Hmmm...Krystal's cornpups are so good!!!

Towards the riverfront...

I don't know what was going on here

Athens, TN (not GA) is a small little town off of highway 75 between Chattanooga and Knoxville. My friend suggested I stop off and check it out as she said it was quite a cute little town. I got there at dusk and for the first mile or two I began to question her taste as it didn't look any different from all the other non descript southern towns I've seen.

However, I eventually made it to the little downtown and it was quite charming.

Knoxville, TN

A bit of the UT campus

An unearthed centaur skeleton in the UT library

Downtown peaking over the UT buildings

Bridges, bridges, and more bridges...

Area code 865 (V-O-L)

The Sunsphere peeping its head

Something needs to be done about the tent on the Sunsphere!

The Christmas spirit still alive in downtown Knoxville

UT Campus again

Goodnight from Knoxville

Great pictures of all three cities. I was in Chattanooga last month, and it looked nice. I wanted to get a picture of Knoxville's skyline as we drove past it, but I didn't get a good chance.

Nice photos. Did realize how much new development was happening there along with all the well maintained historic structures. Nice blend.

A nice surprise - Chattanooga has a very filled-in downtown. Knoxville was slightly disappointing, though, I always hear comparisons with it to Austin, but that's not true based on what I've seen.

Well, I can't imagine how someone would compare Knoxville to Austin. I don't know about Texas, but, a California equivalent of Knoxville to me would be Stockton. A regional city with a big university, but, not much else going for it. Knoxville is nice enough, it just could be anywhere.

Chattanooga did surprise me too! Much more dense and built up than I imagined, and the river front is so nice. The people on the streets are extremely friendly too!

Wow, I've never heard that comparison before, and in my opinion, it's pretty inaccurate. I guess they both have large colleges and hills nearby (although in Knoxville they're mountains), but that's about where the similarities end I think.
