Midwesterner goes deep in the heart of Texas

Ouch, Texas in summer? lol I thought I was the only one crazy enough to plan a trip there during the summer (going end of June). After living through 2.5 summers in southeast Texas, let me tell you to be prepared for the worst heat you've ever felt...though fortunately the River Walk is shaded enough that it's actually possible to be outside there and not keel over. Just make sure you plan your Alamo experience during the morning (no later than 10am). I did so last August and I beat the worst of the heat by about an hour.

Btw, midwesterner, thanks for the pics of SA! It's good to see it.

You actually hit the nail on the head with this pic. I can spot the top 3 things that drive me nuts when I come across them...

1. Sign, sign, everwhere a sign...blocking out the scenerey...breaking my mind - Do this! Don't do that! Can't you read the sign?

2. Highway construction - maybe if they built roads that wouldn't be completely obliterated after just several years of use, we wouldn't have to drive 35 mph through 35 miles of zones with signs that say "Drive slowly my daddy works here" (see #1) - I'm sure there's a big business conspiracy about this one out there somewhere

3. The extremely cliched "support" ribbons on the back of cars - the auto version of "live strong" wrist bands

Oh...and of course, worst of all...the sprawl!

Anyway, awesome pics! - the 7th and 20th are my favorites.
I can picture the heat in Texas being pretty severe...somewhere between the humidity of Louisiana and the "dry heat" of the Southwest.

East Texas is extremely humid and wet (Houston is one of the wettest large cities in the country). San Antonio is less humid but unfortunately not far enough west to escape quite a bit of humidity in the summer. You have to go further west or southwest to avoid the humidity. Only west Texas has the pleasant dry climate.

People always comment on the heat and humidity in much of Texas but seem to forget that the weather is mild to cool for 7 to 8 months of the year. All in all, I would never recommend that anyone visit during the summer.

As a resident of San Antonio, I can tell you that it is NOT cool/mild 8 months out of the year. More like warm/hot 8 months out of the year and mild or cool 4 months of the year. Many years it starts getting hot in Mar/Apr and stays hot thru November.

lol. My Mom put that on the back of my car back in 2002 or 2003 and I instantly took it off.

The last time there was major change was in the late 80's with the addition of the 38 story Marriott Rivercenter Hotel:

and the Weston Centre office tower:

There is the new Grand Hyatt Convention Center hotel (34 stories) under construction right now and quite a few 20+ story condo towers proposed/under construction.
