Holy sh*t! This is the best Galveston thread I've ever seen on here. Great job!

Good to see Yaga's back open after Rita knocked it's side wall down.

Every time I ever went to Galveston, I *always* stopped here for a root beer flavored milk shake. So tasty! They've also got very flavorful saltwater taffy.

Galveston looks like a fun place for a weekend. Haven't been there since I was in high school. How are things in the historic district where all the cool looking houses from the 1800s were being preserved? I never see any pics of that area.

Great pics of ole Galveston.

She is looking good these days compared to what I remember as a teen in the 1980s.

Boris, you and your family seem to have a good time!

Best thread I've ever seen of Galveston. Potential to be like another Miami beach there with highrises in one of those pictures.

It's been far too long since I was last on the island. Doesn't even look like the same place anymore and that is a great thing.

Thx for the comments.

"How are things in the historic district where all the cool looking houses from the 1800s were being preserved? I never see any pics of that area."

DHarper, the residential areas looked good. I didn't have enough time to venture too far from the beach and The Strand. The kids would have rebelled if I dragged them around town and away from the ice cream parlers.

I'll have to go back one of these days to investigate some more.

These are great pics. I love that you see folks in their beach clothes and seagulls flying around in a few shots at the beach, then the next show the downtown area full of buildings from the 1800's and people strolling the sidewalks.

They're really investing in the built/living environment down there. Every year, the beaches are a bit cleaner, the number of downtown businesses grow and there's a new residential project under way.

These are lovely photos, but they only show the absolute best part of Galveston. I wouldn't say they're what it's "like" at all.

Galveston is a baffling place; it's very much like that other famous American barrier island city - Atlantic City. The actual 'living' part of Galveston is for the most part rather poor and full of minorities. This is not a bad thing by any means, I just find that these pictures give a very unrealistic view of this city. I mean, look at how every last person is white! It's shocking even for Texas standards.

I completely agree, arbeiter. These photos, amazing as they are (and they are GREAT, Boris!), certainly don't show the majority of the City of Galveston. Much of the city is pretty run-down, more than a little "trashy", and certainly nothing like the tourist areas make it out to be...

That being said, it's still a nice place...

I completely agree with both of you. I really wanted to take more photos of more parts of the city, rich and poor, but I had my kids with me and it was a fun beach day for us.

I'll have to go by myself in the future and do some exploring.

Thx for the comments.
