Winnipegger's woke to the seasons first substantial snow a couple days back. Most of these were taken within the last few months with a few exceptions before winter's arrival...
First snowfall courtesy of a Colorado Low, we get several a year...
A dog admiring our skyline from Westview Park, once a garbage dump now a dogpark/greenspace and good vantage point.
Portage Ave. is the city's main downtown Street. The MTS Centre is our relatively new arena/entertainment centre and is rated as one of the top 20 busiest in the world.
Looking east down Portage to Portage and Main. If you squint you can almost imagine this is rapid transit running through our downtown.
Unfortunately it's a bus, built here by New Flyer Industries. But rapid transit is finally in the works...
Modern Art ??? and traditional colours of Winnipeg Transit.
MTS Centre, home to the Manitoba Moose, an AHL Franchise. One day perhaps the home to a returning NHL team. But this is a photo thread, and mentioning the NHL in Winnipeg again only leads to pages and pages of eventually arguments...
Celine Dion crowd...
Architectural contrast...
Investors Group, a Winnipeg HQ Company and Portage Place Mall to the right.
Manitoba Hydro Headquarters and part of the skywalk system...
More of Hydro...
From the south, photo from this summer before the tower crane was removed. To the right is the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Building...
More on Portage Ave.
The amazing Bank of Montreal building and WWI soldier, corner of Portage and Main.
University of Winnipeg, which has been expanding recently, Environmental Studies Centre, Theatre, potential dorms etc...
Portage and Main Towers, and a few of our heritage buildings...
Main St. and part of Bankers Row, this intersects Portage running north - south. Further north it gets a little seedy, but their are some positive things happening...
A few from the Exchange District, which could really use another dedicated thread of it's own to do it justice.
South of Portage, an addition to our downtown library, Millenium Library, unfortunately the park space is on hold...
Law Courts and modern art...
Limestone Wall of The Winnipeg Art Gallery. It's a wedge shaped building. Sorry I don't have an image...
Audi R8 and the Manitoba Legislature Building in the background...
More of the Leg. Manitoba's seat of Government...
If you look up top you can see the Golden Boy statue, gold leafed I believe but still impressive...
Inside the 'Rotunda'
South grounds of the Leg. The statue is Louis Riel, the founder of Manitoba. The distant buildings are condos/apartments in the Osborne Village area.
The grounds of the Leg. are on the banks of the Assiniboine River. The riverwalk leads several miles down the river to the Forks district. The Assiniboine freezes solid and becomes the 'Worlds Longest Skating Rink'. Although this claim is still up for dispute, from several other cities, but lets just say it's long and popular. Seven or more kilometers if I remember. This was a walk for the cure march by the way...
The Forks Harbour...
From south river bank...
The Forks is home to a great many attractions, an excellent market, Childrens Museum, national Historic Site, Performance stages, miles of path, skating trails, Spa Hotel, terrific skateboard park and below the home to The Manitoba Theatre For Young People.
Children's Museum...
Spa Hotel and our provinces wonderful slogan...
Observation Tower, 6 stories only...
Inside the market, which was once railroad repair facility and horse stables.
Sugary Goodness...
Manitoban's know the significance of Skinners. Basically it's a hotdog, hamburger joint that started north of the city in Lockport along the Red River, known for lock and dam and day trips for fishing along the Red.
This is Lockport...
Downtown and The Forks Skate Plaza.
Drama queen, but still much better than me.
Even this guy is better, but just barely...
The Forks archeological dig which has since ended, will make way for The Canadian Museum of Human Rights. An amazing 30 story structure spearheaded by one of Winnipeg's most influential and philanthropic families. Regardless of your view of the structure it will be amazing. I for one am all in favor..
The museum site, where the warm up huts are located...
Now across our over photographed bridge The Esplanade Riel, which leads to the French District of St. Boniface.
The bridge crosses the Red River.
and yes that is a restaurant, well a Salisbury House.
Eastside of the Red in early fall. CN Mainline is the rail bridge.
St. Boniface Basilica.
Onto to our new airport terminal, designed by Ceasar Pelli, the airport with also get a 5 star hotel, new greyhound bus depot, and Canada Post facility. Photos are a few months ago.
Now about a year old Winnipeg Humane Society, a huge improvement over the old facility.
Finally a few of the natural areas in and around the city.
Assiniboine Park footbridge.
Pavillion.
Fort Whyte Centre, an environmental centre and natural area, with lakes, trails, marsh boardwalks, bison, and loads of waterfowl within city limits.
People gather for the fall migration, of you guessed it mainly Canada Geese.
and ducks...
Hundreds of deer live within city limits, particularly in the southwest near Assiniboine Park and Forest. Suburban sprawl in these areas will certainly have a major impact on them. Although they are confined to the forested areas more and more traffic =
Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed...
