Melaka to reinstate its maritime hub and trade glory via M-WEZ
By Ayisy Yusof April 8, 2021 @ 1:52pm

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Sulaiman Md Ali says the state government expects between RM3 billion and RM4 billion or about five per cent in the state’s annual gross domestic product (GDP) to come from Melaka Waterfront Economic Zone (M-WEZ) by 2035. Pix by Mohamad Shahril Badri Saali.
Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Melaka state government is expecting between RM3 billion and RM4 billion or about five per cent in the state's annual gross domestic product (GDP) to come from Melaka Waterfront Economic Zone (M-WEZ) by 2035.

Chief Minister Datuk Sulaiman Md Ali said the target would exclude contribution via direct income taxes to the federal government by companies operating in the zone.

"Straits of Melaka is the world's busiest shipping lane with about 100,000 vessels annually.

"It gives an opportunity for Melaka to attract potential investors to invest in our port with various facilities and high technology for shippers," he said.

He also said the current state's Port of Tanjung Bruas facilities were unable to accommodate large vessels.

"If we can have a port with better facilities and high technology, we can attract more ships to Melaka port in the future.

"The development of this port will be carried out by investors and we will offer investment incentive packages to them," he said.

Sulaiman said the state government will encourage the development of container and general cargo ports, cruise and ferry terminals, free-trade zones, logistics hub, oil and gas terminals, ship repair yards and ship-to-ship (STS) transfer facilities.

"STS operations would enable ships to transfer their cargo to other vessels without having to dock at the piers, allowing higher shipping flexibility and reducing costs for shippers," he said.

M-WEZ will sit on a 25,000-acre of coastal and reclaimed land and will have a total distance of 33km between Northern Melaka near Sg Udang and Southern Melaka in Umbai.

"It will be the new engine growth and a game changer with a major economic enabler that is expected to attract more than RM100 billion in high-impact and high-value investments globally over a period of 15 year.

Penang Port eyes 50,000 TEUs transhipment throughput for 2021
Bernama April 29, 2021 18:44 pm +08
Quote:
BUTTERWORTH (April 29): Penang Port Sdn Bhd expects the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) — which was gazetted as a free commercial zone (FCZ) effective Feb 1, 2021 — will achieve transhipment throughput of 50,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) this year.

Transhipment, which is the shipment of goods or containers to an intermediate destination before being taken to another destination, would be one of the most impactful activity after the gazettement of NBCT as a FCZ.

Chief executive officer V Sasedharan said Penang Port would leverage the FCZ status to reach greater heights as it would enable the port to be one of the focal points for shipping and transhipment activities.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kumpulan Powernet Bhd (KPower) has bagged four contracts worth RM510 million from four companies to build their hydro power plants in Pahang and Perak.

The contracts were awarded by Cabaran Hijau Sdn Bhd, Selat Serasi Sdn Bhd, Denai Delima Sdn Bhd and Koridor Mentari Sdn Bhd.

KPower will undertake the engineering, procurement, construction, commission and completion (EPCC) of mini hydro power plants in Pahang with a capacity of 18.7 megawatt (MW) in Sungai Jelai Kecil, 13.9MW in Sungai Telom as well as 12MW in Sungai Lemoi and 5.25MW in Sungai Kampar, Perak.

The scope of work includes the preliminary study, engineering, construction, supervision, testing, commission, reliability test, remedy of defect during the defect liability period and provision of all equipment.

"The relevant parties will enter into a definitive agreement within 60 business days from the date of acceptance of the awards with the commencement of the execution of the projects to begin immediately," KPower said in a statement today.

Group managing director Mustakim Mat Nun said the projects represented KPower's commitment to continue making in-roads in the renewable energy infrastructure space within Malaysia.

Mustakim said the EPCC contracts in Pahang were KPower's first in the state, while the additional contracts in Perak enabled the company to continue xpanding there.

"The contracts mark our concentrated effort towards securing continuous projects for the company as we work to achieve our target of an additional RM2 billion orderbook by this financial year end.

"With Malaysia's and Asean's target of 35 per cent of renewable energy share of installed capacity and also our pre-existing local and regional presence, we are well positioned for growth," he said.

Mustakim said KPower was optimistic of its prospects in view of the resilient outlook for the energy sector and the expected economic recovery.

KPower has secured a sizeable RM2.3 billion orderbook in Malaysia, Asean countries and Nepal since June 2019.

For this financial year, inclusive of the latest contracts, KPower has secured RM1.2 billion of projects and is confident of securing RM2.0 billion for the year ended June 30, 2021.

First Porsche plant outside Germany to open in Malaysia – DRIVE
February 8, 2021
Quote:
SDAP (Sime Darby Auto Performance Sdn Bhd) has been the official importer of Porsche in Malaysia since 2010. The photo shows the first Porsche center in the country, where used cars are also sold. In addition to it, two more sites have been opened, and the third, flagship, is being completed.

The first Porsche manufacturing facility outside Germany will appear in the Malaysian town of Kulim, Kedah state. Reuters and Bloomberg reported on the launch of a full-cycle vehicle assembly (CKD) at the filing of The Edge Weekly. The local SDAP partner simply cannot make an official announcement. Severe MCO (Movement Control Order) restrictions imposed by the Malaysian government due to the pandemic do not allow Germans to come and hold a joint conference with SDAP.

PUTRAJAYA (June 22): Malaysia and the UK have jointly launched the "Smart City Handbook: Malaysia" to promote collaboration and partnership in smart city development between the two countries.

The handbook outlines the smart city landscape across Malaysia, and provides examples of interesting UK smart city projects and expertise.

Launched virtually today by Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, the book also provides suggestions on how and where UK companies could assist Malaysia in managing and solving various issues in developing smart, sustainable cities.

She said cities in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Putrajaya, Penang and Kota Kinabalu had initiated various smart city initiatives, some through collaboration with foreign nations such as the UK and international organisations such as The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and Mott MacDonald as a delivery partner.
