Wow. You don't often see 1,500'+ buildings with such brazen lack of architectural thought. China may have several dozen 1,000'+ buildings rising but the overall quality of the architecture is sorely lacking. You would think that flagship buildings deserve stellar designs... if this even gets built, that is.

I think the current design is still better than what was originally proposed- a giant hand.

Well, it still looks a tiny bit like a hand- the lower setback would be the thumb and the higher part would be the fingers; it's just been made somewhat abstract. The original design had actual fingers.

The glazing looks pretty stellar to me (at least in the SSC renderings), and I don't think the design looks bad. It's not insanely-innovative or anything, but the shape's ok.

As far as China's supertalls go, the ones that have been built recently in GZ, SZ, TJ and SH are all above average to spectacular. Guangzhou's supertall stock is very impressive, and so is Shanghai's. Sorely-lacking is not a phrase that comes to my mind.

They should have built the giant "hand", lol. It's more interesting than that current rendering.

I don't think the design is that bad; the problem, to me, is the setting.

What is the point of a suburban supertall? If you build a giant tower in the middle of a park/campus environment, you lose the whole appeal, at least to my liking.

I guess I'm more of an urbanist nerd than a skyscraper nerd, becuase these types of towers do nothing for me. There's no context whatsoever. It could be off a highway exit in Texas, or in Dubai, or on the face of the Moon for that matter.

I always say that, towers built in such locations may as well be on the moon. It could be two miles tall, and I really wouldn't care. I know a lot of skyscrapers are built outside of cities, but for me skyscrapers represent cities. They are best when joined together to form a skyline, which is usually how we envision cities.

But, if they insist on buildiing such towers, designs could make them more interesting. This one just doesn't cut it for such a tall building.

^ I have to agree there. So many Chinese supertalls are being built on huge plots where a large plaza (or greenery!) surrounds them. Even in superdense Hong Kong the ICC is far from the urban area.

It's really a pity, because some Chinese towers tend to have a great design. In fact I love the Ping An in Shenzen or the CTF in Guangzhou.

That I can agree with.
I'm sure there's some master-planned office/residential/retail district to be built around these supertalls, but yeah, it's really awkward-looking having them surrounded by empty green space.

Right.
Only Guangzhou's IFC looks much better with its X-bracing and semi-transparent cladding.
This one is just boring and seems half as tall as it really is.
