Springtime ~ Downtown Salt Lake City ~ A little of this and that.

A lot has changed in the last three years since this thread was bumped. I'll be posting new pics of the many beautiful new developments over
the next week or two, so check back soon.

Stagehands prepare the Capitol Theatre stage for the musical "Wicked"

(Keith Johnson, Deseret News)

The Historic Capitol Theatre was originally constructed as a major vaudeville venue.
The Capitol now serves as home to the internationally acclaimed Ballet West and the Intermountain West's
foremost Regional Opera Company. The Capitol has also served faithfully as a venue for touring broadway productions
for several decades. However, this will change soon as a much larger theatre will be added to downtown that
will serve the metro's passion for major broadway productions and their required lengthy stay. The Capitol's
seating and orchestra pit will be remodeled to more ideally suit it's beloved ballet and opera.

LDS Conferece Center: One of the aspects that impresses me most about this giant building is
how it interfaces with it's neigborhood. To the south it's facade and plaza are indicative of it's downtown environs
as a monumental and cultural neighbor. As I walked around it a couple of days ago, I was taken back by the now
maturing landscaping covering it's terraced walls to the east and north. This combined with it's rooftop gardens make
for visual feast for the historic downtown neighborhoods, which are immediately adj. to and either surround or climb
abruptly on two of it's sides. Even those living in high-rise towers to the immediate north have beautiful gardens
to look down on instead of a giant, sterile and vapid roof.

Interior of Assembly Hall, seating over 22,000 people, is the largest of it's kind in the world.
Pictured, is a weekly rehearsal session of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This venue is often used by the Choir
instead of it's famous, traditional venue, because of it's seating capacity. Ongoing conventions, LDS faithful, and
tourists had often overwhelmed the capacity of the historic tabernacle on Temple Square. The hall is also used
as host for major holiday pageants and as a concert hall for renowned opera soloists or performing artists, etc.,
where seating demand is too high for other downtown venues.

The entire downtown is extremely vibrant and jammed during the daytime. While not as lively in the evening ,
that is changing rapidly as large amounts of 24/7 residential and entertainment is added each year. The West
side Gateway district, which is relatively new, has become a very vibrant and diverse area of downtown.
The traditional core of blocks surrounding Main are currently under a multi-billion dollar reconstruction
and make-over. I'll add a few more pics above to give you a better idea of some of the current and
ongoing construction and daytime people watchable crowds. In additon to the stunning historical architecture, I'll
also add a few pics of the beautiful contemporary architecture, that is becoming a hallmark of Salt Lake's downtown.

Yeah, I agree TANGELD. It seems like there's allot of great photographers in the area to capture it too. One thing I've noticed though, is that people often tend to want to exclude passers by when photographing a beautiful piece of architecture. However, I think most on this forum always prefer to have plenty of people in the mix.

It looks like salt lake goes into spring a little later than we do here in boise.. probably because of the higher elevation...
Just need those highrises to be completed and it will add some very much needed density to compliment the world class ammenities..

Woah just noticed the new pics and thanks for sharing. Is the Gateway part apart of Downtown proper - i never thought it to be. gotta say SLC isn't the first place i'd think as vibrant but no it looks full of life. on top of that it looks like it is in a RUM (rapid urbanization movement). the sheer construction is just amazing ... edmonton had more low rise construction rather than high rise except for in the university but now we're getting a few more towers to change our skyline for the first time in what 20 yrs (last major tower before 2006 was in 1990).i hope to visit the city in the near future it looks like an interesting one. The gateway shopping place though to me just looks too much like an outdoor mall. good Photos!

Yes, Gateway and it's surrounding district is now very much a part of the downtown proper. Before the Olympics that area was largely brown earth. The large amount of commercial, residential construction and especially lightrail weaving throughout, has gone a long way in expanding the traditional parameters of downtown.

IMO it's a crime that such a, gorgeous, city hasn't been more celebrated by the national and international media! I believe the completion and debut of the, massive and astounding, City Creek Center project will give Salt Lake City much greater prestige amongst North America's, elite, cities.

A view of a section of the Gateway District,
Downtown Salt Lake's newest and quickly expanding western sector.
This was historically the heart of the old railroad district. In addition
to its revived status as the urban chic place to be, it also now serves
as the central hub of the entire metro's light rail and commuter rail
services. Notice the FrontRunner Commuter in the upper right corner.

The Ombudsman Hall. This much loved, old
historic treasure was lifted and turned 180 degrees recently. It will
now be move to the right and then across the street to sit next to
it's beautiful neighbor, The New York, pictured behind. This is being
done in order to make room for a new federal courthouse. The entire community has collectively held it's breath,
worried that the building could possibly fall apart. Engineers, politicians,
and citizens alike will rest much easier when the Hall is resting on it's
new foundation.

City Creek Construction Site ~ At the heart of Downtown
Richard's Court, These residential units will serve as a gateway entrance to the newly resurrected Richard's Street. This street was a bustleing center of commerce for many decades during the 19th and first half of the 20th century, but was destroyed
to make room for an enclosed Mall. Fortunately, times have changed and
hard lessons have been learned.

Swank new residential tower, yet to be named

New Regent Tower begins to rise. This luxurious
tower will serve as a Gateway to the newly resurrected Regent Street. Another historic street, which had been buried will now emerge
as a hub of elegant shops and restaurants, "Salt Lake City's version of Via Veneto."

In the middle of it all, this historic beauty was
deemed obsolete,(would cost more to bring up to standards than
demolish and build new.) Thankfully, the uproar of the community was
so loud and united, that the demolition proponents backed down and
agreed to it's upgrade and restoration.

Great pictures. It looks like nothing got left out. I especially liked the view of the City-County building from the courthouse rotunda at sunrise. Udderly amazing.
