That seems like a lot of asphalt for no good reason. Do vehicles really need a circular drive to turn around in? (at that size, it looks like it would only make it more challenging to to get to the launch.) And why develop prime waterfront as truck + trailer parking when that space could be used for better interaction with the water and better placemaking. There is plenty of space along Onigam for trailers to park.

This is the 'prime' pull-out spot for OWL Rafting, among others. Lots of 6-person white water rafts are pulled out of the river here, after travelling down from upstream. I assume they had a hand in this design? (Hopefully, anyways)

Its a shame, this building was in good condition, roof and all, about 15 years ago. It became prime squatter land before it burned, leaving just the walls behind.

I thought it burned down in the mid-90s?

Didn't it burn down only a few years ago?

Burned down in 1989. Kind of surprising they kept it around for so long. Usually, when a heritage building burns down, or brick work needs extensive repair, or minor of structural issues, or a light bulb was changed, it gets torn down.

Quote:
The City is proposing to preserve the ruins of the former Hintonburg Pumphouse, enhance public amenities and facilities, and restore areas of natural vegetation and shoreline. The site is located on the Ottawa River at 5 Onigam Street between the Ottawa River Parkway and the bridge that accesses Lemieux Island. The 1899 City-owned, heritage-designated building was destroyed by fire in 1989 and has remained in ruins. Accessible from the Ottawa River Parkway and by multiuse pathways, the pumphouse public space complements other civic experiences including the Chief William Commanda Bridge multi-use pathway, the nearby Bayview Innovation Centre and the renewed Laroche Park.

Maybe if the NCC owned it, but this is the City we're talking about.

A museum or a tavern would've been nice but it won't be happening. At least rent it out to a rafting company for $1 or something.

Raft/tube/kayak down from Bate Island, have a lunch, shuttle back. Nice little urban adventure.

I would hate if they just repaired and boarded it up, like they did with the brick houses at Chaudiere Falls for example.

Snippet from CityNews article on the designation of the Lemieux Island Water Treatment Plant.

Quote:
Not the only water facility designated

The Lemieux Island Water Purification Plant is not the only facility to be designated as a heritage structure.

The Hintonburg Pumphouse, located on the mainland of Lemieux Island, is another city-owned heritage building that was built in 1899. It was replaced by the Lemieux Island facility and turned into a residence and gatehouse for the island in 1932.
It was designated a heritage structure in 1987 and two years later was destroyed in a fire. Sitting in ruins for the last several decades, the city started exploring ways to turn the small piece of Ottawa’s history into something more.

In May and June 2023 a design plan to turn the area into a public park was chosen. Construction is set to being this month.

If they put safety booms along the piers of the southern half of the Chief Commanda bridge and between some of the islands to form a corral around Lazy Bay, this spot could be a great place to have some rental pedal boats and kayaks. The river is actually quite calm here and paddling around the small rocks and islands is interesting. I've paddled around them but there's not enough to do for the effort to haul a boat out there, but if there's a ready and family-friendly activity with a cafe/bistro to boot, it might be a nice addition to animating the waterfront.
