Looks like we're getting an AHL team.

OVG says pro hockey will be returning to Hamilton

Based on Pistore’s timeline, we should be finding out which is our new team sometime in September or early October.

They also announced that the Toronto Rock are returning this winter, although I don't think there was much doubt about that. Although maybe a team name change to go with the arena change, get a totally fresh start as a Hamilton team would have been nice.

Too bad they didn't do more drastic changes to the exterior. Looks like some paint and signage

Not in the plans yet:

"Despite the return to Hamilton, the team's name will remain the same, the team's director of communications Mike Hancock said Friday."

The first version of a lacrosse team that played here was called the Ontario Raiders, specifically to instill a "regional" feeling about them. I believe they became the Toronto Rock after moving to the Big Smoke.

Golden Horseshoe Rock

Or Escarpment Rock (I originally typed Niagara, but Hamilton is definitely not that region... maybe the gateway, but that's it)

The interior is what matters most. As long as the exterior doesn't look so "worn" I'll be happy... and perhaps future upgrades will change the external appearance.

There's only so much they can do with a 40-year-old building on the budget they have.

Looks like Oak View Group is shopping for a new CEO.

Former MLSE boss Tim Leiwecke indicted for allegedly rigging US arena bidding process
(Toronto Star, July 9, 2025)

From 2018 to 2024, Leiweke allegedly led a scheme to steer the entertainment contracts for the arena to his company, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. His spokesperson denies any wrongdoing on the part of Leiweke.

Oak View Group CEO Leiweke leaves post after bid rigging charge on UT arena project
(MSNBC, Eamon Javers & Dan Mangan, July 9, 2025)

Oak View Group CEO Tim Leiweke was indicted on a federal criminal conspiracy charge related to allegedly rigging a bid to develop, manage, and operate the University of Texas’ basketball and entertainment arena in Austin, the Department of Justice said Wednesday.

Oak View Group, which will pay $15 million in penalties in connection with the allegations, later Wednesday said that Leiweke “will transition from the position of CEO to” vice chairman of the entertainment venue giant’s board of directors, and remain a shareholder.

Leiweke, 68, is accused in the indictment of conspiring with another would-be bidder on UT’s $338 million Moody Center arena project to induce that second company in February 2018 to drop out of the competition with Oak View Group in exchange for receiving lucrative subcontracts at the 15,000-seat arena.

CNBC has been told the second company was Legends Hospitality, a New York-based venue services company that is majority-owned by Sixth Street Partners, and whose minority owners include the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys.

Paul McCartney to open TD Coliseum with Hamilton show this fall

https://www.ctvnews.ca/toronto/local...how-this-fall/

Sir Paul McCartney is set to be the first act to play the newly renovated TD Coliseum when it reopens in Hamilton this fall.

McCartney will be coming to Hamilton on Nov. 21 as part of his Got Back Tour, which includes 18 other stops, the venue announced Thursday.

Hamilton is the only other Canadian city included on the tour aside from Montreal, where McCartney will play two shows.

In a news release, TD Coliseum General Manager Nick DeLuco said the performance will mark a “bold new chapter” for the 18,000-seat sports and entertainment venue and speaks to the calibre of acts they’re planning to host.

“Opening night deserves something extraordinary, and it doesn’t get any better than Paul McCartney,” DeLuco said in a statement.

The venue said McCartney will deliver a “high-energy, career-spanning set filled with iconic hits and inspiring music.”

I forgot to take pictures in the concourses.

Outside looks spiffy with the new dark paint. This continues through the building- pretty much everything is painted black / dark grey, with gold used as an accent colour on signage, etc.

There's now a new concourse level that's at street level from Bay St. - you no longer have to immediately go up those escalators.

Nearly all the food+beverage are the new self-serve style, where you grab what you want and pay at a self checkout kiosk. (Still asks for a tip, though!). It was a little awkward compared to the only other time I've seen these (Pittsburgh), because they ID you on the way in and then stop you to make sure you've opened your drinks on the way out.

Beer selection was interesting - Peroni is the headliner, with one area called the Peroni Club, the only other options I came across were Grolsch and Asahi Super Dry.

LOTS of different food options. Some areas are themed (Matty's Burgers, Casa Escobar tacos, Dip sandwiches) and then more generic stadium fare in the self serve areas. I had some fried chicken tenders that were pretty good, the same counter had buffalo chicken, poutine, etc.

The new clubs/suites/loges around the top of the bowl fit in quite well, they look like they were meant to be there from the start. The ice-level club area in interesting, the clubs were open to the bowl with the concert seating arrangement but those seats would be absolutely terrible for hockey. There must be different temp seating for hockey that is stored elsewhere. (lower left of first photo).

Looking East (towards Library)

South Side (Jackson Square) Suites:

North Side Loges (York Blvd):

West End (Bay St) "Centre Club":

New Rigging framing and reinforced roof trusses - the frame for the scoreboard is buried in there, but there's no screens mounted yet.

And a shot of the concert, for good measure:

Lots of talk a year ago about Hamilton getting a hockey team of some level and it looks like it will be happening, although not the Marlies like a lot of people seemed to be convinced of. The AHL Bridgeport Islanders are apparently moving to Hamilton for next season. The team is owned by the NHL club so it would be staying as an Islanders affiliate. Hasn't been confirmed or announced by the team or league yet but it's being widely reported now.
