Here's another 1959 slide from the same eBay seller.

The location of this one is fairly clear.

We are looking west on the 101. In the distance (on the right) we can clearly see the waterfall of the Pioneer Memorial on N. Hill St. at the foot of old Fort Moore Hill.
Los Angeles High School sits atop the hill above the memorial.

Apparently the only remnants of the foreground rail bridge are this raised section of the cement wall, and the matching one on the opposite embankment. Was this Pacific Electric?

The photographer was standing on the Alameda St. bridge, BTW.

Last week when we were discussing the Garrett Corporation out at LAX I happened upon this oddity.

This trackage, labeled by Caltrans as "Daniel Spur", diverged from the Southern Pacific San Pedro Branch on Alameda St. approximately at the entrance to Union Station. It ran about a half-block east of San Pedro St. and didn't quite reach E. 1st St. As it was actively serving one or more customers, Caltrans was obligated to provide for the bridge shown in the 1959 photo when it converted at-grade Aliso St. into a below-grade freeway c.1950.

As rail customers began moving away from the wholesale area in the 1960s, the spur and its bridge served no further purpose and so were eventually removed.

The 1890 CD has M. C. Bettinger as principal of the Brooklyn Street School which just has an address of "near Main".

The 1891 CD, however, lists the Thirtieth-Street School. Some of the staff are the same as the staff listed at the Brooklyn Street School the previous year. Here are the ones I found in 1891.

The photo seems to belong to Getty Images. Their full caption reads:

Los Angeles, CA- Mrs. P.G. Garrett, wife of Westinghouse General Engineer on the Pacific Coast, in a shocking love scene with Romeo Televox, the ideal lover. You should hear his line of static; Televox, the talking, mechanical Robot is on display at the convention of the Pacific Coast Electrical Association.

The same photo appears in a book called 'The American Robot: A Cultural History' by Dustin A. Abnet. It can be downloaded from dokumen.pub. The caption there reads:

Mr. “Herbert” Televox with the wife of a Westinghouse engineer fawning over it. Women’s interest in Mr. Televox was a particular theme emphasized by Westinghouse and commentators as a way to satirize fears of technological unemployment. The original caption dubbed the device “Romeo Televox, the ideal lover.”

It doesn't look like the spur was ever very busy. This 1957 aerial shows cars parked across both approaches. Looking at Historic Aerials, it appears that the bridge was removed between 1997 and 1998.

My mother came home one afternoon in the late 1950s or early 1960s in a state of shock. She told me she was walking on that bridge and saw a woman throw a baby into the traffic below. I have never been able to find a newspaper article about the incident.

John Adams Middle School is located on 30th between Grand and Main. Their web site documents a history back to 1923, but I wonder if another school existed on the same property before that.

EDIT: and yes, that is exactly where the 30th Street school was - I checked out the 1910, 1914, and 1921 Baist maps and the 30th street school got progressively larger with each one. At the time, neither Hill nor Broadway extended to that area, so the school property extended partially over both of those current streets. But the oldest street-facing building was exactly midway between what is now Hill and Broadway, which is the right side of the school's existing 1923 building. The comparison below is with the 1910 Baist map.

With all those cars packed in like sardines, my guess is a nearby auto dealership was using the space to store their inventory.

If you look at the full 1957 aerial, many of the other parking lots had cars squeezed in in a similar manner.
