Count me in as another one who generally prefers the PNW climate (technically Mediterranean, bordering on Oceanic) to mostly anywhere else in North America. Maybe a bit further south, like coastal Oregon & Northern California are probably closer to ideal though. The Northeast & Great Lakes meanwhile are a close second for me.

Portland just needs more streetlights. Its the darkest big city I've ever been in. Otherwise I love the climate.

when i first met my spouse we lived in columbus and my older sis in law to be in seattle used to whine that pnw whine about the rain out there. we would heckle her when the annual rainfall was higher in columbus. its all in the difference of course — buckets of rain vs lingering misty rains. in the end its just a silly scare to keep people from moving out there. i don’t dislike seattle/portland, it’s fine to visit, but i’m not a fan either and wouldn’t live around there.

Living in Vancouver, the climate really only got to me from late September through Christmas. In October, especially, the eastern half of the continent is just much more pleasant with Indian summers and the vibrant fall colours.


* Victoria would be my favourite city to live in Canada, but it's extremely expensive (even by awful Canadian standards) with very few good job opportunities (even by awful Canadian standards).

Yeah, I prefer Toronto's weather from about August to December. August & September are great in either, though the lack of a regular late-summer wildfire season is definitely a plus in Toronto's case; but fall and early winter are definitely better out east. I'll take Vancouver's weather the other 7 months of the year though.

Just give Taipei more skyscrapers and some polish and you pretty much have the most kick-ass city in the world. Not the most beautiful, but probably the best combination of urban form, human scale, vibrancy, and visual eclecticism.

Instead of make believe, this probably will actually happen!

I'd say Buenos Aires. The urban form, from the grid layout to the endless density, charming architecture, tree-lined streets, amazing pedestrian experience, southern European laid-back culture with people taking full advantage of the public realm on cafés, restaurants and bars.

Said that, it's not my cup of tea for actually living there. It lacks this edgy, creative, non-conformist urban culture, present in cities like Berlin or São Paulo. Maybe a bit like Paris, where the strong mainstream culture is so overwhelming that leads to some sort of conformism and uniformity.
