I would like to see the same focus with Benson Highway. It is pretty depressing to drive Benson from downtown to Swan. This is such an interesting stretch of road with the old hotels, it is a shame to see it so bland and at times, run down. It seems Tucson is turning a blind eye to this road but it has potential. If the Kino South complex goes forward with the new facilities, this should spark road and landscaping improvements for Benson highway.
Tucson zoning in on code changes to encourage more housing
Tucson is seeing more and more car washes and drive-thrus pop up all over the city. City leaders say that has a lot to do with the city’s zoning code. Now they are looking at ways to change those restrictions to encourage more housing development.
Tucson to build aquatic park at Mission Manor Park
The city of Tucson said it is going ahead with a major project on the south side. The $6.2 million, 37-acre project will include the demolition of the existing aquatic complex, which closed in 2008.
Downtown Tucson Offers Hip Spots to Live, Work, Play
“They say that for a vibrant downtown, you have to live, work and play,” said Fletcher McCusker, chair of the Rio Nuevo board of directors, which has driven much of the development downtown with access to millions of dollars in assistance from the tax increment financing district.
‘As Albuquerque, you deserve that’: Tucson business leader shares how the city revitalized its Downtown
Marquez was the keynote speaker at the Economic Forum of Albuquerque on Wednesday, laying out to business leaders how Tucson took its Downtown from rags to riches — an area that now generates millions of dollars in revenue and has seen a resurgence in new businesses across food, entertainment, residential and retail — through tax increment financing.
I really, really hope things change but I've personally been waiting since 1986 for a new hi-rise in Tucson. Still waiting. Hope I'm not dead before it finally happens.

Ditto on that. I find it kind of embarrassing our skyline is the same as in 1987. While other cities are booming upwards with residential living structures...nothing is happening in Downtown Tucson to push that agenda forward. I blame Rio Nuevo and City of Tucson for not writing up proper RFPs on land that would specifically call for buildings 20 stories or taller. Phx does this on many projects especially in the Roosevelt area and they have vast more housing downtown than we do. Our downtown living is basically suburban apt complexes built downtown of 3-6 stories. You can find those in other parts of the city. We need to build higher. At least the Ari on 4th is 13 stories. But it wont change the skyline at all. We need a 25+ story skinny building placed among the 3 other taller buildings downtown to make that visual change.
On a bike ride this beautiful morning, I decided to check out the new development on the Pascua Yaqui reservation. As I cruised by I captured a few phone camera images there in addition to an image of another nearby local landmark. I have posted them below. Although I must apologize as I did manage to fat finger one of the shots.
The new Pascua Yaqui development is deep in the rez south of West Valencia Road. You can see the mid-rise building from West Valencia Road as you drive by if you know where to look.
I was impressed by what I saw. If nothing else, IMHO the design style of the homes was more attractive than much of what the big national production builders are slathering across the local landscape. My humble dos centavos.
The red X marks the location of this development:
