Lunenburg bumps

Lunenburg is an old fishing village in Nova Scotia, about an hour west of Halifax. As a historic fishing town established in the 1750s, it has a lot of architecture that you would find in other fishing villages in the region, like in Maine or Massachusetts. Houses tended to be in a simple Cape Cod or Georgian/Federal architectural style. Some time in the 1800s, dormers were added to the center of some of these simple, boxy houses. The dormers provided light and air to the upper rooms, and gave some decoration to the simple architecture. These overhanging dormers became known as "Lunenburg bumps". The trend continued into other styles, such as with some Victorian houses. This vernacular architecture is found only in Lunenburg and some surrounding towns.

Great pics, I visited Lunenburg NS once as a kid. It reminded me of Bath and Wiscasset (both Midcoast Maine).

Knowing where you travel and take pics, I thought you were posting about Lunenburg MA and I was thinking "WHY would be there?!"

The attic was already there, but the roof was just a plain, slanted roof. These little window bays with fancy embellishments were added on later, and are the Lunenburg bumps, because one person started it, and then other people around town ended up doing the same thing.

Haha! I didn't realize my travels are pretty predictable. Some upcoming photothreads, when I have time to work on them, will hopefully change that up.

I want to see Bath and Wiscasset some day. Wiscasset was one of the finalists to become the capital of Maine.
