It appears to me that under order 2022-A-2 each side was stuck with 6 round trip per week
  • *YVR with three (Xiamen, Air China, Sichuan)
*YYZ with three (China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan)

So do we go back to the pre-covid capacity that was multiple daily flights per day to each destination or was there something between that we are reverting to?
From what I've seen, its 18x weekly on both sides. But this was more than a month ago, not sure if it's still the same.

According to reports, AC had applied to increase YVR-PVG to daily from Dec 7, and resume daily YVR-Beijing (no mention of which airport) from Jan 15, 2025. The flights are not available on AC site as of this time.

Looks like a big uptick in Asian capacity coming soon.

Long overdue and time to catch up.

That’s great , my guess is nonstop between Vancouver YVR - Beijing Capital PEK, as most of Air Canada’s Star Alliance partner airlines operate to PEK .

Yes it will be AC 29/30 YVR-PEK-YVR similar to years , before it got suspended during Covid19 pandemic.

Air Canada To Resume Daily Service To Beijing, Increase Shanghai Flights To Daily.

MONTREAL, Oct. 30, 2024 /CNW/ – Air Canada today announced the airline will be resuming daily service from Canada to Beijing and will be increasing its Shanghai flights to daily. Both routes will operate from the airline’s Vancouver (YVR) hub. Seats are available for sale at aircanada.com, through Air Canada Contact Centres and via travel agencies.

“We are resuming our non-stop services between Canada and Beijing and increasing our flights between Canada and Shanghai, reflecting the importance of these markets in Air Canada’s global network. With the investments we have made at our YVR hub linking Air Canada’s extensive North American network to our international flights, travelling between North America and Asia is convenient and compelling for leisure and business travellers alike. We look forward to welcoming our customers onboard our flights,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President – Revenue and Network Planning at Air Canada.

Are there any sources of data showing the number of flights or pax from YVR to Mainland China (or Asia) pre and post Covid?

MF adds 2nd weekly YVR-XMN starting Nov 14
No change for YVR-SZX, as HU opt to resume YYZ-PEK from Nov 17

Air Canada press release on daily YVR-PVG and YVR-PEK
https://www.newswire.ca/news-release...862406577.html

Looks like Jan 15 is indeed the earliest possible start date for PEK based on AC's fleet. The Jan 15 flight will use the plane now freed up due to DXB reduction, and from Jan 16 onward will use the plane when seasonal AC37/38 flight to SYD ends. This means unless there's new fleet coming and assign to YVR base, AC will no longer have a plane to run the seasonal increase to SYD in W25.

Alongside its decision to reduce flight caps from China, Canada has expanded its air transport agreement with Australia. The agreement includes an unlimited number of direct passenger and cargo flights and enhances operational flexibility for each country’s airlines. It also includes access to any point in the other country’s territory.

“This expanded air transport agreement will improve connectivity for passengers, deepen our cultural and commercial ties, and strengthen our supply chains,” says Anita Anand, Canada’s transport minister. In 2023, Australia was Canada’s 18th-largest air travel market, with 534,075 one-way passenger trips.

Additionally, Canada and the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority have signed a memorandum of understanding to increase Doha-Toronto frequencies to 7X-weekly. The move comes as Qatar Airways plans to launch a 3X-weekly route from Doha’s Hamad International Airport to Toronto Pearson International Airport from Dec. 11.

Looks like MU choose to increase YYZ-PVG to 4x weekly. After all, AC already have daily service between YVR and PVG.

HU already added once weekly YYZ-PEK, so they won't increase YVR-SZX.

3U and MF should increase the YVR service to 2x weekly each, as there is no other choice for them.

CA can either increase YVR-PEK to 4x weekly, or split some frequency to YUL. I'm hearing the latter, since AC already will operate daily at YVR and JV with CA.

Then Canadian side will still have 4x weekly left. Not sure if WS would be interested and magically come up with plane to fly YYC-China in this summer. If not, then AC would likely get the remaining frequency. There is currently 3x weekly slot left out of YVR from late March after the reduction of HKG. So now AC will have to decide whether to increase SIN, extend AKL/BKK to year-round, or add another 3-4x weekly night flight into China.

Will YVR ever get MEL (Melbourne) back? With the current uptick in air travel, it would seem a possibility. In addition, somebody posted that it had a sizeable J Class- thus, would it not be profitable to reinstall?

With the fleet stretched out so thin, nothing until the B78X/321XLR start arriving. Hoping they allocate it so that YVR gets a net gain of aircraft over the next 2-4 years, instead of all the aircraft remaining stationed in YYZ/YUL.

Great news about china!
