Currently a more seasonal 25c and overcast. Funny how cold it feels compared to the past few days.

It's a thing - maybe American? Maybe anglophone? I don't know the history or anything but people do it. It's kind of like toilet papering someone's house, maybe? Not common, but everyone knows what it is and has seen it, if only in movies.

*****

Went to the superette and there was one guy in line in front of me, Irish accent. He and the cashier were chatting about travel, and 30-40 seconds in, the conversation turned to how people are properly nice here, say hello passing by you on the street, and always willing to chat, etc. So I leaned in and said, "Would ye two arseholes hurry the fuck up, I'm waiting here?" and they both gasped I think it's the most successful joke I've ever made in my life. They died laughing when they realized I was tormenting based on their convo.

It's meaning is a bit of a mystery, but a common theory is that low level drug dealers will hang a pair outside their home to signal that they're willing to sell.

Given the location that SHH's pictures were taken, that'd be a pretty good guess about its meaning.

OK, it's really weird and funny.... But how do you attach the shoes? Do you use a ladder? Isn't it dangerous to touch electrical cables? Why don't the authorities remove them?

You tie the laces together and then spin them like a net. Hold the lackes (EDIT: laces lol) where they tie in your hands, spin them, and toss them up trying to align the rotation with the wire.

It was a hot night, the temp hovered around 27 until 6am when it rained. We got another round of rain about 10am. Now it's clearing and right back up to 27 with a humidex of 35

The heat warning has been lifted, as we will only be up to 27 or 28 today and dropping to 18 by tomorrow morning.

It's an idea that has been bouncing around in my head, but I'd focus on my images of Shanghai. I have fourteen years of photos from that city, and documented an incredible amount of change. The ones from 2005-2010 feel downright vintage now.

I look at this photo thread I posted 15 years ago, and it doesn't feel like the same city.

Your photography might have commercial value, but that's a whole different thing. That thread shows lots of artistry and creativity, it's great. Vintage photography has a value of it's own, a historical record. That said, I probably would not be able to tell, being unfamiliar with the city, that it's not recent. There might be some clues, like cars and fashion. These days, every populated corner of the world is photographed many times over each day, the sheer volume must be literally hundreds of times greater than it was, say only 20 years ago.

So it would be interesting to show in a photographic book the changes recorded over the years in that city

That's what keeps me from committing to doing a book; commercial appeal. I had a friend who published a photo book of Shanghai a number of years ago (when Shanghai and China were "hot"), and it absolutely bombed. This was after he published a very successful Tokyo photo book, so you really have to think about what customer you're appealing to. I've had offers to publish my work in the past (when I was living in Shanghai), but I turned them down.

Detailed photo books about a place and time long past seem to do well as coffee table books, and it's something I'm always interested in, but I'd need another 10 years at least, and even more dramatic social change in China for it to have the effect I'm looking for.
