Best Chinese restaurants in Richmond
 

Sorry for such short notice, but my wife and I are heading down to Richmond for a bit of a culinary adventure today (Thursday), and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for some 'must-eat' restaurants. We're more in to trying the Vancouver-style Chinese food that has become so popular amongst locals and visiting Chinese, so any recommendations to places like those would be appreciated.

I'm from here, but I've been living abroad for quite some time now.

My wife's favourite thing to eat is a hamburger, so we've already done White Spot, Vera's, Fatburger etc. Now it's time to get on this Vancouver-style Chinese food everyone seems to be raving about. Actually, Vancouver's food scene (especially it's Chinese food) is well known among the traveling Chinese. Even Taiwanese (the food snobs of Chinese Asia) love Vancouver's Chinese food.

I'm here until the end of August. Currently, we're staying at the Fairmont Pacific Rim for a much needed break from the family :).

It's easy to forget. Until you travel.

For an authentic Chinese noodle place, I was recommended to go to a place called "Michigan Noodle Shop"

For "fusion" I love "Wild Rice" downtown.

If you want to eat in Chinese food in Richmond, all you're going to find is HK/Taiwan-style food, you usually have to go somewhere else for decent mainlander stuff from my experience. The noodles at peaceful restaurant at Broadway/Cambie (within 1 block from Canada line) are pretty darn good, as well as the rest of their stuff which is more northern Chinese cuisine.

Kirin - on No.3 & Westminster. Hands down the best dim sum in town. But don't take my word for it. Vancouver Magazine ranked them #1 for Chinese food as well.

If you get out to Burnaby, the best chinese food in the world can be had at 'Capitol Hill' on hastings.

'Vancouver-style' Chinese food is interesting in that you really can't find this type of food outside of Vancouver. It's like Hong Kong style Cantonese food from the 90s, but then evolved in it's own direction while Hong Kong's food went another. Most of these types of restaurants aren't the high profile ones... most of them are the kind of neighbourhood/regional eateries that everyone seems to have their own favourites. i.e. my own personal favourite Vancouver Canto food is nowhere near Richmond... hehe it's in North Burnaby.

Richmond has alot of Taiwan/mainland (i.e. non-Cantonese) people now, so the variety is definitely skewing in a different direction. Taiwanese, Northern and Shanghainese restaurants are everywhere.

That being said, I would perhaps look at some of these Richmond restaurants. I really don't know if they're 'the best' or 'must eats' because the culinary landscape moves far too fast for me to follow.

Shiang Garden Restaurant (Empire Centre Mall). This is a Cantonese-style seafood restaurant with good dim sum, catering to the large banquet crowd. This is a huge restaurant.

Jade Seafood Restaurant (Alexandra Road). This is also a Cantonese-style seafood restaurant with dim sum but seems to me to be more 'traditional flavour'. Just seems more old school food with some hints of village food influence, but in a good way.

Tsim Chai Noodles (Westminster Hwy). This is the place to go for mouth watering Cantonese-style won ton. I can't vouch for anything else on the menu. But if you are wanting a mid day tasty mouth orgasm snack, I'd suggest trying there. They used to be hands-down the best won ton in town, but they have more competition now.

Chef Hung Taiwanese Beef Noodles (Aberdeen Mall). Not Cantonese... but boy these hand made noodles are gooood. Go for the thick noodles. They are pretty awesome. Very Taiwan experience, with the plastic food models in the window. Side dishes are also top rate.

That place on Hastings on Capital Hill was not my favorite at all. Mine is Congee Noodle House on Broadway at Main. Black bean squid on crispy noodles. Scallop rice rolls. Noodle soup.....
Next would be Hons.
I guess we all have different tastes, and there s so many types of chineese restaurants..... Fancy or more of a dive. Western or traditional. Also there are so many different regions in Chineese to experience.
I prefer grubby, cheap, and to go where the chineese people eat. I love being the only white person in the restaurant.

Peaceful restaurant? Never been there, b/c I would always go to Sha-Lin noodles - IIRC, peaceful opened a few months ago, while sha-lin has been there a few years. I would get the cumin noodles. If I'm extra hungry, i order the kebabs as well.

I should prob mention the favourite restaurant I talked about in my previous post is Fortune Court on Hastings beside the bus loop. It's busy, food is awesome, prices are cheap, and it's fairly close to where I live. A place I can go to once every week or so without worry... that's what a good neighbourhood eatery should be.

I agree Congee Noodle House is really good. They got voted the best congee restaurant in some restaurant award. I can't remember the name of the awards tho.

I think if you're going to have Vancouver Canto food, you have to have crab. Vancouver crab is basically a staple in most dinners here, using local Dungeness crab. The crabs are large, the meat is sweet, tender and clean. You can order it cooked many different ways but the standard is stir fried with ginger and green onion sauce. (IMO they're better than Shanghai hairy crab, at least you get some meat)

You should also order any type of plain (or with minced garlic) straight stir fried greens. Gai lan, Pea shoots, are the two most popular. Our produce here is pretty good.

Hmm, well the restaurant rated the "best Chinese food in the world" has relocated from central Richmond to Steveston. Its called Zen on No. 1 Road between Moncton and Bayview. Never eaten there myself. A trip to Steveston on a sunny day is always nice too. http://zencuisine.ca/

Shanghai River on Westminster near No. 3 Rd is good, as is Kirin near the same location (which is weird 'cause I hate the Kirin on Cambie in Vancouver).

if u were comign form shanghai, then i wouldn't recommend any shanghainese restaurant, they dont have the variety...fried sticks, small dumplings and etc r not real shanghainese cuisine...they r snacks

there's a cantonese one inside metrotown, pretty big, that one got a good deco and design, and the one inside oakridge...or hong xing on granville...
they got pretty good food, compared to the bigger ones i went to in shanghai...

A new one I discovered in Vancouver is Lin Chinese Cuisine, between Granville and Fir.


Both are very good.

there was a place in richmond near aberdeen - i don't remember the name - it was taiwanese style chinese and it was so good and packed with a line up when we left - it had a modern decor, simple menu, lots of bubble tea choices - maybe someone here knows the name?
