I would just like to use this opportunity to say - I WANT A FLIGHT TO EUROPE FROM A MAJOR CARRIER FOR WINNIPEG.

Thank you.

Some photos from my recent trip home to Halifax of the Airport. They have been doing a lot of renovations recently and the airport is looking good with lots of new flights.

New road network and the expanded regional flight gates (ground loading). The barren site to the right of the new roads is where the new Airport Hotel (le Germaine) will be located (recently announced it's going ahead).

New Parking Garage from the new sky-walk over the main roadway system - also updated arrivals look with new glass.

US Airways - a new carrier to Halifax and doing really well (already upgraded flights, not just because of traffic but because of fog issues).

The main hall with shops, restaurants and awards oh yeah and Syd! Taken from the elevator up to the observation lounge on Level 3.

Some ramp action...the dark great gates are either new (part of the recent addition) or replacement (gate 16).

More ramp action...

The new upper level walk way to the US Check-in area - above the new starbucks (just opened).

US Check-in area to US Pre clearance - located above the domestic arrivals area.

US Check-in.

Looking down at the International/Domestic Arrival areas. The International Arrival area is at the top of the screen, domestic is to the right.

The globe with the plane flying around it...

One of the models of the two bridges in Halifax (The McKay and MacDonald Bridges). The centre baggage carousel has a model of the Town Clock on it.

I'm afraid I didn't get pics of the check-in area but there was a recent announcement that the Domestic/International Check-in area will be renovated to look like the arrivals area; which will be great because it feels a little cramped with the low roof.

All the photos are taken by me and come from my recent thread in the photos section on my easter trip home.

Vancouver will be the only Canadian destination for the U.K.-based airline, which offered a brief service to Toronto over a decade ago. However, that was cancelled following the 9/11 terrorist attack in the U.S.

Sask and Hali looking good.

Since there was a pretty active thread about Fort McMurray, I thought I would post the link to the Fort Mcmurray Airport Expansion program. The current airport is a dive, but the new one looks very interesting.

There are rumours of Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU) getting a terminal. They want to start building it next year, and hope to offer domestic flights and attract around 50,000 passengers a year.

This could potentially work as Montreal's "City Center" Airport. I know YHU was trying to woo Porter a few years ago.

There were even proposals a few years ago to extend the Yellow Line of the Metro to Saint-Hubert airport. They likely would instead just divert the commuter trains serving the south shore to the airport.

Bigtime Nov 22, 2011 2:16 PM

I wonder if that expansion at YHU is related to the announcement from Pascan that they will be purchasing 4 ATR-42's.

Greater Moncton International Airport (CYQM)

Here are a few pictures of the airport from their home page

Yearly passenger volume at GMIA is ~550,000

Regularly scheduled passenger airlines include Air Canada Jazz, WestJet, Porter and Continental.

Year round destinations include Toronto Pearson, Toronto Billy Bishop, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax and Newark.

Seasonal destinations include Varadero, Punta Cana, Montego Bay, Cancun and Orlando. Service is provided by WestJet, Sunwing and Air Transat

This is a map of the taxiways and main building around the airport:

http://www.cyqm.ca/site/media/gmia/C...rlines_Map.png

The 06/24 runway is going to be lengthened to 10,000 feet by December 2013. This is to support the growing air freight business at the airport. The airport handled nearly 23,000 metric tonnes of air freight last year, making it the 9th busiest air cargo facility in the country. An air industrial park is currently being developed along the northern fringes of the airport next to the Trans Canada Highway. A number of the available lots will have direct taxiway access. The GMIA has just signed a partnership agreement with the Liege Airport in Belgium (one of the largest air cargo facilities in Europe) to promote interconnecting business.

The Moncton Flight College on the southern perimeter of the airport is one of the largest flight training schools in the country. It has an affiliation with nearby Mount Allison University so that students can achieve a B.Sc in aviation if they so wish. The fight college has been training international students for years and recently signed a $7M contract with the Beijing University of Aeronautics so that they could serve as the flight training school for that university.

Nice airport! It looks a lot more substantial than I would have expected.

halifaxboyns Nov 27, 2011 1:51 AM

Moncton airports makeover has always impressed me. I remember the first time I went to YQM in the old terminal and my first thought was 'what a dump' - it was really sad. This new terminal is light years from what was...great improvement. My only complaints is that they went from 3 air bridges down to 2 with the new airport design. That may have been because there wasn't as much need; but still personally I would've kept it at 3.

Granted since the new terminal opened; AC no longer flies DC9's into YQM (since they retired them) and it's mainly the CRJs and now the Q400s. But Westjet does good business with their 737's out of YQM - so I'm sure 3 bridges will come soon enough. :)

MonctonRad Nov 27, 2011 2:05 AM

:previous:

Funny, I can't really recall the old terminal having three bridges. I do remember when they were installed though.

There are times when three bridges at the new terminal would be nice. The terminal was planned with expansion in mind however and this situation could easily be addressed in the future.

If I recall, the current terminal can handle up to 750,000 passengers per year, but the terminal can seem pretty congested in the early morning with all the flights leaving to make connections in Toronto, Montreal and Newark.

The expansion like this photo from Toronto Pearson International Airport? I really appreciate this improvement of our airports, because bigger competetion is bigger quality! :)

Looks like YHZ is seeing Icelandair come back for cargo operations after leaving 3 years ago. But YYC is going to loose their Frankfurt flight from Lufthansa.
