What will enable YHU to handle jets is a new terminal. And that won't happen until well into the 2020s. |
Evolution of YHZ's terminal (photos taken at roughly similar angle):

^ Canada's collection of 1960s International Style airport terminals was the absolute peak of transportation-related building design in this country. Every one of them was amazing.
The modern terminals have a ton of wonderful creature comforts but they will never come close to the old ones when it comes to sheer style and design. |

The YHZ airport authority went for the Ship of Theseus strategy rather than the dramatic new terminal approach. They probably saved a boatload of money and the terminal is fairly functional, but it was really ugly for a few decades when it was only half overhauled.
We get expensive terminals because the airport authorities can raise lots of money but I am not sure they're a great use of money from a social perspective. I've also been in plenty of soaring modern airport spaces that didn't function well at all (Barcelona's stands out for that). |

There are still some weird design characteristics that exist because the old terminal has been overhauled piece by piece. For example, the domestic arrivals area has low ceilings in the baggage claim area, but then more typical ceiling heights out front (a new section). I'm not sure what the original purpose of the low-slung ground floor area was. It may not have been a public area. |
Here's some other views of YHZ from the '60s......

Here's a YHZ Transport Canada Brochure from around 1980. Note the floor plan shows ticket counters for two airlines only: Air Canada and Eastern Provincial. Also.....just three bridges at Gates 18, 20 & 22.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-u...s800/Image.jpg That DC-9 in the International Area is probably just in from BOS & JFK and interesting......a Cubana DC-8! https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N...282%252529.jpg |

You could built a small, cheap but effective terminal (with some room for expansion) and host ULCC flights within 2 years. MUCH better option than YHU. ULCCs could generate a traffic of 1M passengers in the Montreal region alone right away. Is YHU capable of handing that? I don't think so. By having them at YMX, you tap in into Ottawa's market as well. But this is never going to happen unfortunately as no politician would be willing to face the negative shit storm that is going to ensue following such move. |

Primera adds more flights to YYZ and YUL next summer with new service to FRA.

The city of Castlegar just hired Stantec to consult for a 25 year master plan for YCG.

AC fleet/base YYZ - E190 / Rouge A319 / Rouge 767 / B737 / A320 / B767 / B787 / B777 YUL - Rouge A319 / Rouge B767 / B737 / A320 / B787 / A330 YVR - Rouge B767* / A320 / B787 / B777 YWG - A320 (*soon to close, most likely replaced by B737) One of these 4 is the odd one. Guess which one and why. And considering YYC doesn't even have a pilot base, it's pretty obvious why AC keeps its base in YWG open. ACPPA. That's all. BTW, it's a very small base. Less than 100 pilots I believe, and your only mainline destinations out of YWG are to YUL, YVR and YYZ, 3 other A320 bases, (excluding seasonal CUN and MBJ flights) and therefore easily flyable by non YWG based A320 crews. |
