bomberjet Sep 9, 2022 3:35 PM

I quite like this one. Will get to watch it rise now that I'm working downtown again.

With some luck, no one will decide to paint it in twenty years like Colony Square.

buzzg Sep 10, 2022 12:24 AM

TV only .41 bike spots per person?!?

trueviking Sep 12, 2022 2:57 AM

^ ha ha. That’s huge compared to what normally gets built. Has a nice big bike room right off the main lobby to have easy access in and out as well as visibility from the security desk. A bike maintenance area with tools, wash, and a stand is part of that room.

Any update on the lot across from this?

Nice to see the progress, thanks for the pictures!

Biff Oct 20, 2022 7:27 PM

I can't believe they are going to/can build the building with that crane.

WinCitySparky Oct 20, 2022 9:44 PM

That crane can have an extension added to it for higher height once it caps out, to a limit of course. Or there are bigger crawlers available that can go up to 400’, they had a couple at the Keeyask hydro dam.

Jeff Oct 20, 2022 10:05 PM

it seemed suspicious when they used a crawler for the spot at east village.. they got 'er done but not without a few glitches if we can all recall.

Thanks, Unbending

I noticed the other data the crawler crane had been folded up, and it looks totally absent now. I guess they're done with the parkade pre-cast

Echoes Nov 22, 2022 7:20 PM

Lovely building. Please send one to Saskatoon.

A newer, bigger crawler crane is on site, and the foundations are coming along.

Excellent. Are you privy to any approximate timelines?

bomberjet Dec 7, 2022 2:21 PM

So just to confirm as it's hard to tell in the renders. But there will be a single story brick faced building in front of the parkade? Along St. Mary next to the parkade entrance?

wags_in_the_peg Dec 7, 2022 2:35 PM

i LOVE the existing Keg location downtown, I sure hope they not moving

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Although I wouldn't worry about someone else moving in there if The Keg vacates, it's a pretty desirable spot for a restaurant.

I concur.
The Keg location now is well located. Nice surroundings, well treed patio.
I envision more of a popular local place likely expanding from some other smaller location here.
1/2 block to Broadway, 2 blocks to Main, 3.5 to Portage Avenue, 3 to the Forks

I see why they are doing this move.
My guess is with CHOP opening up whenever Sutton Place Hotel opens, this keeps them fresh & current.529 is opening @ P & M albeit smaller and limited menu spring 2023, Hy's is nearby as is the new Earl's @ Winnipeg Square. Bailey's is near there as is Velvet Glove.
I prefer the Downtown Keg location of the 3 in the city but this brings them likely a better layout & closer to the competition.
The Garry St location has a great history.
.Hudson’s Bay Company Garage @ 115 Garry Street, was built 1911 & is a municipally-designed historic building since 2019.

Wpg_Guy Dec 7, 2022 8:09 PM

Isnt the developer of this building the franchise owner of The Keg in Winnipeg?

the ground floor of the parkade is set back to create a covered patio for a potential restaurant tenant.

The high archway kicks ass

bomberjet Dec 8, 2022 2:44 PM

Nice! Thanks Vike.

wags_in_the_peg Dec 8, 2022 3:42 PM

can you tell us what that sign protruding from the building says? Is it "The ***"?

Gadzookz Dec 15, 2022 7:35 PM

Not to be negative because this does seem to be an excellent development for downtown, but what exactly is it about this project that has everyone salivating so much in comparison to other buildings? Just looks like a fairly plain, boring looking 14 story brick building to me. Everyone seems to be more over the moon with this project vs anything else

optimusREIM Dec 15, 2022 7:38 PM

Design quality is superior, it also fills a surface parking lot. It's a win win.

Yeah, these are both factors. It feels like the parking lot canyon along Donald Street has been highly resistant to any kind of substantial development for years, decades even. It gives me hope to see something significant going up along that stretch.

GreyGarden Dec 15, 2022 7:58 PM

I echo what’s been said. It is a dense residential building filling a downtown surface parking lot with good design and nice materials (it doesn’t look cheap). That combination is very rare in Winnipeg.

We don't get a lot of high rises this size built with brick anymore, especially red brick. It has a warmth and classic appeal to it. Everyone likes the glass TNS buildings, Wawanesa, and I believe most liked the 300 Main tower design. I know we all want more glass towers downtown, but a good brick building thrown into the mix is always welcome.

zalf Jan 12, 2023 7:12 PM

Didn't have my phone with me for photos, but some pre-cast has now been put in place for what I believe is the main building, as opposed to the parkade.

Malcsta Jan 15, 2023 7:10 PM

Where is TritonDreyja when you need him? Would love to see 3D renders of this build

trueviking Jan 16, 2023 5:41 PM

^ Yup....she's out of the ground.

bomberjet Jan 16, 2023 6:11 PM

Is the whole building precast?

trueviking Jan 16, 2023 6:32 PM

it is.

bomberjet Jan 16, 2023 7:54 PM

Cool, thanks. Must be one of the larger precast buildings around.

Was the apartment on Stradbrook all precast. Can't remember what it's called.

trueviking Jan 16, 2023 8:12 PM

yeah, it was....beside the winter club....the difference is that building used the precast as the exterior finish....this one will have brick on top, except for the inset areas on the north and south, which will be precast....unfinished, which could be cool.

most of the side facing place louis riel will also be precast finish.
