I just discovered that this construction camera exists for the new downtown justice facility. It updates every hour or two during working hours with a new still image. It's at a good angle, and it has pretty good resolution. This one is from 4:00pm local time today -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/j69trzvsu5...lity.png?raw=1 Source: senserasystems.com Two posts ago, I mentioned that 530 S Rose St. was back in the queue for site plan review. It turns out that there is a new rendering after all, found at the article below. As I suspected, it looks relatively unchanged from the previous version (aside from the removal of the second garage door) - Quote:

It's been a slow two weeks for any exciting news / updates. Just a few small things -
Kalamazoo - Downtown Justice Facility - Current screen grab of the construction camera. Temporary weather protection is up on floors 1 & 2. Spray-on fireproofing is being applied to structural steel on these levels. You can see some exterior insulation & weatherproofing being applied at grade too. The block stair towers have risen a little since the previously-posted shot. On a vacant lot 2 blocks west (here), I noticed a soil boring rig up and running last week. Not sure what that's about, but it appeared to be conducting some soil tests in that area. The lot is currently being used as construction staging for the justice center. https://www.dropbox.com/s/a9ril959zm...lity.png?raw=1 Source: Sensera Systems Two new infill houses are under construction on Wall Street - in the Vine neighborhood. The 9-story Crosstown Parkway Apartments just wrapped up a renovation. I don't know if the roof modifications were purely an aesthetic choice to "modernize" the structure, or if they serve a functional purpose (like concealing rooftop equipment or mitigating leaks). Either way, not a big fan. Here's the "before" view, from 2019 - https://www.dropbox.com/s/wvwc9vkz6y...ents.jpg?raw=1 Source: WWMT | Patrick Hagan And here's the new look (photos taken by me this morning) - https://www.dropbox.com/s/qqbpr9iuhn...%201.jpg?raw=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/jhuk9sr5ab...%202.jpg?raw=1 Not much to report for 400 Rose. Kalamazoo was featured recently on an episode of "John McGivern's Main Streets". They covered a lot of the predictable stuff - things like Bell's Brewery, The Gilmore (both the car museum and the music festival), Air Zoo, Gibson Guitars, Checker Cabs, Pfizer & Upjohn, paper, greenhouses, celery, the downtown pedestrian mall, and so on.
I've never heard of this show myself, but it's gotten some local buzz. You can watch the full thing on Youtube & educate yourself about our fair city here - I don't really think the kazoo thing is true though (1:30 into the episode). The episode does provide a nice aerial of the city from a less common angle, featuring some of the newer construction - https://www.dropbox.com/s/vc08p6yse5...rial.jpg?raw=1 Source: Discover Kalamazoo | John McGivern's Main Streets There was some eye-catching antenna work going on at the Comerica Bank building downtown today - https://www.dropbox.com/s/d1c54q4snl...%201.jpg?raw=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/fc1rfpez9z...%202.jpg?raw=1 I drove by the new Farmers Market. It still looks from finished, but it will be open starting next weekend, regardless, while work progresses. It looks like the designers made a genuine effort at some placemaking within the central commons area. It should be a vast improvement and will easily accommodate many more vendors, vehicles, and patrons - https://www.dropbox.com/s/ecllp8oo8s...%201.jpg?raw=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/kb2r2hme76...%202.jpg?raw=1 I also drove by Westgate Commons. First, in Oshtemo Township - Quote:
Kalamazoo County is going roundabout crazy, with three new roundabouts planned in the not-so-distant future. The locations are as follows -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/nv5mtmgc15...uts.jpeg?raw=1 Source: MLive | RCKC The Schoolcraft Township one seems particularly obscure. It is in a pretty rural area with very light traffic. Meanwhile, just this morning at another local roundabout that seems to give motorists trouble - Quote:
The elevator shaft for 850 Trade Centre Way is rising. It's at least 4 stories now (maybe 1 more to go?) - https://www.dropbox.com/s/c317zyi7ks...%201.jpg?raw=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/0cuzzztqv0...%202.jpg?raw=1 The former Family Dollar at the corner of Westnedge & Kilgore was actively being demolished Friday morning. It is being replaced with the one thing that is less sexy than a Family Dollar: a "Drive & Shine" car wash, detailing, & oil change center - https://www.dropbox.com/s/onutc8godn...%201.jpg?raw=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/uiqbis3u6y...%202.jpg?raw=1 Lastly, just south of here, the Westnedge Meijer is undergoing a massive remodel. This is the oldest Meijer store in the region. Meijer has been updating all of it's older generation supermarkets in the area, including the one on West Main (Oshtemo Twp. - completed a year or two ago) and the one on Gull Rd. (ongoing). The Westnedge store had a unique, though somewhat dated style, including several businesses on the second floor (more akin to an indoor mall). I don't know if the second floor area (or its businesses) will remain after the remodel. The superstore is open during construction and I've heard from others that it's a nightmare navigating around inside & out, so I've been actively avoiding it - https://www.dropbox.com/s/cyznfz5rkw...%201.jpg?raw=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/57r3gygqkd...%202.jpg?raw=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/1em25q1kng...%203.jpg?raw=1 |

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on developments in Southwest Michigan Deja Vu! I'm definitely looking forward to the one-way streets becoming two-ways.
It's also exciting to see the steady improvements to downtown. Hopefully, there are many more to come. |

Even though we're still 4-5 years out from seeing actual results for Kalamazoo Ave., the city's complete streets program has been exacting other improvements throughout the city already. Most notable right now is the traffic calming measures happening along the reconstructed Stadium Dr. I've read a lot of complaints from motorists about the plans, but the simple reality is that they get used to the changes pretty quickly once they are in place, and it enhances safety for them as well as for cyclists and pedestrians. |

There were two recent site plan review submissions for Kalamazoo's Eastside Neighborhood. 1802 E Main St. is a proposed renovation of a vacant property for a new restaurant. Two blocks south, 1601 E Main St. involves a new 2-story, mixed-use commercial / residential building on this vacant corner lot.
Both are smaller-scale projects, but important pieces in a bigger plan to revitalize the core of this neighborhood - https://www.dropbox.com/s/oshbd5hc8x...view.jpg?raw=1 Source: City of Kalamazoo | INFORM Architecture https://www.dropbox.com/s/j5yegb0fa3...view.jpg?raw=1 Source: City of Kalamazoo | INFORM Architecture |
