Yeah, I stopped in Kalamazoo on my way home from Chicago last weekend. Are there any plans for the reuse of the old Parchment Mill? I stopped by there too before leaving the area. Huge place!
|
I haven't kept up with it. There have been several different plans that have fallen through. It's all tied-up now in legal battles and finger-pointing, mostly related to groundwater contamination. Georgia Pacific, which had the most recent ownership when it was a working facility, is fighting with DEQ and EPA over who's responsible for the recent PFAS drinking water contamination in the city (of Parchment). Parchment has since had to hook up to Kalamazoo's (relatively) clean water supply in the meantime. It's the west side's version of what went down in Flint.

More info on the Graphic Packaging International Expansion. It's actually a pretty big deal for the region -

I missed this in my update from yesterday, but The Creamery project is also moving along with vertical circulation cores rising now. This is not a tall one (only 3 stories) but it will do a lot in the way of density for the growing commercial corridor area in Edison Neighborhood (Washington Square area).

Last week I got to go on a hard hat tour of The Milton (former Heritage Tower) in Battle Creek. It was pretty amazing and I took a lot of photos that I will post in 3 batches. Here's part 1 - some of the photos are quite dark because there is no permanent power in the building yet. Hard to imagine that they plan to have parts of this building occupied before the end of the year!

Part 2. This is a $36 million+ investment in Battle Creek. While there is one owner, there are many stakeholders, including groups like Battle Creek Unlimited and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Part 3. Keep in mind that this building was vacant for many years and for a while, was considered to be a total, un-salvageable loss that was at imminent risk of demolition. It will soon house commercial retail, restaurants, offices, and apartments.

This is fairly big local news - confirmation was made recently that FedEx will be the occupant of a new proposed distribution center in Portage (codename: Project Spartan). It is claimed that this could potentially bring 900 jobs to the area.

Great photos of The Milton! I'm excited to see how it looks when it reopens. That lobby space is going to be amazing.
The other day I was thinking about remaining vacant high rises in Michigan, and I believe this is the last one in the state west of Lansing and Jackson. Lansing has the Farnum Building, which should be under renovation soon, and Jackson has the old Hayes Hotel. Everything else is in or around Detroit. One by one our urban centers are coming back to life. |
^Absolutely. It goes without saying that if a structure like The Milton had been demolished, nothing even remotely similar in scale, style, or quality could ever have taken its place. It truly is a gem on the west side of the state. And yes, that atrium is going to be an incredible space when completed, and hopefully it will remain accessible to the public. A lot of fortune, lucky circumstances, good timing, and level-headed people contributed to its saving.
Back in Kalamazoo, Bronson Healthcare had its "topping out" ceremony yesterday (tiny tree and all) for the new Cancer Pavilion. Quote:

Thanks.
Two articles out yesterday have me scratching my head. They both say that 180 E. Water. St. will add (4) more floors in 2020. That would bring the total floors on this u/c structure up to 11 stories. That would be awesome, but unless I really missed something or there was a big redesign that flew under the radar, I think this is wrong. The current renderings all show just 7 stories. The 7th floor was already u/c in 2019, as can be seen in my photos posted yesterday. Quote:
