Seven storeys proposed for the corner of Somerset and Booth - the old fire site turned parking lot. Mixed use building, 54 residential units. Can't happen soon enough, either.

While it's good to see something going in there, I had always hoped that a Chinese artisan market or a Museum of Chinese-Canadian history would've been equally appropriate.

design review panel comments

288 Booth Street | Formal Review

The Panel is in full support of this building. It is a phenomenal response to the context.
The Panel commends the applicant on being responsive to their previous comments.
The scheme thoughtfully takes into account the entire streetscape.
There is excellent access to bike parking. The Panel praises the applicant on giving equal weight to on-grade car and bike parking.
In refining the scheme, it is clear that the lantern, balconies, setbacks and entrance to the residential units became more polished designs. The Panel appreciates this effort.
The Panel commends the applicant on choosing a brick that will serve to complement the red materiality. The red colour will stand out in this context and the Panel looks forward to seeing the development built.
On the previous scheme, the brick wrapped around the corner of the building to provide a sense of a basic brick mass supporting the more transparent projections. It has now been divided into separate, disconnected brick surfaces, and the applicant is encouraged to bring this element back into their current scheme.
Rather than projecting the retail at the corner, the Panel encourages the applicant to set it back and allow for an urban piazza. This can be achieved by creating an alcove to allow for this space.

Greetings and welcome to the forum.

This is a truly excellent project, and hopefully it works out for this beginning developer so that he is able to attemp some more similar projects.

Darwin's posted about this development before, and it seems like the Dalhousie Community Association has been pretty positive about it, but why let facts get in the way of these tiresome kneejerk rants anticipating other tiresome kneejerk rants? (S-Man, etc.)

Well, I was going to say the price listings for these units seem pretty steep considering the square footage, but I don't want to be reactionary.

Because 99 times out of 100, the kneejerk reaction tends to be completely accurate.

Any news on this project? They were supposed to break ground in the Spring and we're now in the Summer. The last few times I drove by they had some equipment at the site, but there was no work being done.

Not looking good. The website is non-existent (domain is parked) and there is no more sign on the lot.

I just read a previous story about the challenges of building on this piece of land, wires hanging overhead and bedrock underneath. Hope another developer will come along and do something as this is long overdue for a new building.
