Formerly known as Peking, and from 1928-1949 as Peiping.

Beijing today stands as the political and cultural center of the People's Republic of China, a hub of international activity, and an important socialist base. Great changes have taken place since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The city walls were demolished to facilitate transportation and allow for general expansion. By 2001, the population exceeded 12.5 million, and the total municipal area was increased to over 17,800 square kilometers.

In 1990, Beijing hosted the Asian Games, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards becoming a major international sports host city.

In 2008, Beijing hosted a memorable Summer Olympics, showcasing its modern face and cultural depth to the world. The Winter Olympics followed in 2022, making Beijing the first city to host both summer and winter Games, further highlighting its global prominence.

Beijing continues to thrive as a dynamic metropolis, where ancient traditions meet cutting-edge innovations, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and modernity for all to explore.
