Baoji, formerly known as Chencang, is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Shaanxi Province. It is located in the western part of Guanzhong, Shaanxi Province, adjacent to Xianyang and Yangling demonstration areas to the east, Hanzhong to the south, and Tianshui and Pingliang in Gansu Province to the northwest. The total area is 18117 square kilometers. As of January 2021, it has jurisdiction over 4 districts and 8 counties. At the end of 2022, the permanent resident population was 3.2647 million. As of 2022, the regional gross domestic product is 274.31 billion yuan, with a per capita regional gross domestic product of 83801 yuan. Baoji is a national civilized city, an excellent tourist city in China, a national forest city, a national garden city, a national environmental protection model city, a national greening model city, and one of the top ten ecologically livable cities in China. It has won the China Environment Award and the China Human Settlements Environment Award for City

Baoji City is located at the composite junction of the Qinling latitudinal tectonic system and other tectonic systems, with the characteristics of north-south connection and east-west transition. It can be divided into three geological structural units: the Qinling fold belt in the south, the Weihe fault depression belt in the middle, and the Ordos platform syncline area in the north. The topography of Baoji City is characterized by mountains on the south, west, and north sides, with the Weihe River as the central axis extending eastward in a pointed and open groove shape. It has mountains, rivers, and plains, forming a trend of "six mountains, one water, and three fields". Baoji belongs to the warm temperate semi humid climate zone, and the climate change throughout the year is subject to monsoon circulation, with distinct seasons of cold, warm, dry, and wet. There are abundant mineral resources in the territory, and 190 mineral deposits have been discovered.

As of the end of 2022, there are a total of 8 ordinary universities and adult colleges, 40 ordinary high schools, 22 vocational high schools and secondary schools, 148 ordinary junior high schools, 387 ordinary primary schools, 593 kindergartens, 6 special education schools, 416 high-tech enterprises, 77 gazelle enterprises, 15 art performance venues, 14 cultural (group art) halls, 13 public libraries, 116 township comprehensive cultural stations, and 2824 medical and health institutions.

After the unification of China by Emperor Qin Shi Huang (221 BC), Baoji was under the jurisdiction of Neishi; Cao Wei (220-265 AD) was known as Fufeng Commandery; Baoji City was established on July 16, 1949. In January 2021, with the approval of the State Council, Fengxiang County was abolished and Fengxiang District 2 of Baoji City was established.

As of the end of 2022, there are a total of 53 A-level scenic spots in the city. Tourist attractions include Tongtian River National Forest Park, Taibai Mountain National Forest Park, Famen Temple Buddha Culture Scenic Area, etc
