Changhua City serves as the capital and largest city of Changhua County, boasting the highest concentration of high-rise buildings in the region.
In the past, the city’s architectural landscape was dominated by traditional townhouses (tou-tian), interspersed with occasional office buildings and mixed-use highrise. The first major wave of highrise construction occurred in the 1990s; however, new highrise projects nearly ground to a halt following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck central Taiwan in 1999.
Over the past decade, shifting lifestyles and rising costs have led to a resurgence in high-rise developments, which have now surpassed townhouses to become the city's primary residential choice. Currently under construction, the Chungyo Changhua Store will not only be the first major shopping mall in the city and county but is also set to become the tallest building in the city.
