Marienberg is municipality in the district Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis in the south of Saxony, and also that district's capital. It is also part of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft (Administrative Partnership) of the same name, which includes Marienberg and the town of Pobershau.
The town is situated on a plateau north of the Ore Mountains, and located approximately 16 km southeast of Chemnitz.
Today, the town's economy is based mainly on tourism, and it has an historic and important city center.
