Chaoyang, formerly known as Longcheng, Liucheng, and Xingzhong. Chaoyang is located in the western part of Liaoning Province, China, with Hebei Province to the south; North borders Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region; Donglian Liaoning Central Industrial City Cluster; Located on the coast of Bohai Sea to the south; To the west lies the economic circle of Beijing, Tianjin, and Tang. Chaoyang City is a prefecture level city in Liaoning Province. As of 2020, the city has 2 districts, 3 counties, and 2 county-level cities under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 19699.14 square kilometers. The permanent population is 2.798 million people (2022). At the end of 2022, the total regional GDP was 99.5 billion yuan, an increase of 2.5% over the previous year.

Chaoyang is located in the northern temperate continental monnoon climate zone, with a terrain that slopes from northwest to southeast. Chaoyang City has abundant mineral resources and a complete range of mineral varieties. 53 types of beneficial minerals have been discovered, and there are more than 830 mineral deposits. Among them, there are 46 mineral resources with proven reserves. Chaoyang is an "excellent tourist city in China" with a splendid Hongshan culture, known as the "place where the world's first flower blooms and the first bird flies". Chaoyang also has the title of "Oriental Buddhist Capital".

The name "Chaoyang" originated in the 43rd year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1778). During the Sixteen Kingdoms period, Murong Xianbei established Longcheng (the predecessor of Chaoyang City) as the capital city of the Three Yans; During the Northern Wei to Sui and Tang dynasties, Yingzhou was established; Xingzhongzhou was established in the Yuan Dynasty, and Chaoyang Prefecture was established in the late Qing Dynasty. In 1964, Chaoyang City was abolished and merged into Chaoyang County, and Chaoyang Special Zone was established. In 1970, Chaoyang Special Zone was renamed Chaoyang District. On August 30, 1979, the State Council approved the re establishment of Chaoyang City (officially established in June 1980)
