Chengde is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province, located in the northeast of China and Hebei Province, adjacent to Beijing and Tianjin to the south; North of Chifeng and Xilingol; It is adjacent to Chaoyang, Qinhuangdao, Tangshan, and Zhangjiakou in the east and west. As of July 2021, the total area of the city is 39500 square kilometers, with 3 districts, 4 counties, 1 county-level city, and 3 autonomous counties under its jurisdiction. As of 2020, the permanent population was 3354444 people. As of 2022, the gross domestic product of Chengde City is 178.02 billion yuan. In 2007, Chengde was awarded the honorary title of "Model City for Double Support" at the national level by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the General Political Department; On February 9, 2010, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development named Chengde City as a "National Garden City".

Chengde City belongs to a continental monsoon climate that transitions from semi-arid to semi humid in the cold temperate zone, characterized by distinct four seasons, simultaneous rainfall and heat, and large temperature differences between day and night. The terrain within the territory is complex, with mountains crisscrossing and rivers intersecting. Chengde has a good ecology and abundant resources, with 98 types of minerals discovered.

In the 2022 academic year, there are 1066 kindergartens in the city, including 34 provincial demonstration kindergartens and 16 provincial demonstration high schools. The city has 6 regular higher education institutions, 24 secondary vocational education schools, 136 regular middle schools, and 448 primary schools. At the end of the year, there were 2898 public health institutions in the city, including 35 hospitals.

According to archaeological evidence, there were human activity relics in the Chengde area as early as the Longshan Culture period in the Central Plains. During the Warring States period, the area around Chengde was under the jurisdiction of Yuyang Commandery, Youbeiping Commandery, and Liaoxi Commandery established by Yan State. In 1928, Rehe Province was rebuilt and Chengde became the capital of Rehe Province. In 1955, the administrative system of Rehe Province was abolished and Chengde City was transferred to Hebei Province. Until January 1984, Chengde City was changed to a provincial-level city. On July 1, 1993, Chengde merged with other cities. There are famous scenic spots in Chengde: Chengde Mountain Resort, Saihanba National Forest Park, Fengning Bashang Grassland, Jinshanling Great Wall, Wuling Mountain, etc
