Baoding, formerly known as Shanggu, Baozhou, Jiaocheng, and Baofu. It is located in the central area of Hebei Province, at the eastern foot of Taihang Mountain, and is the central city of the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region. Baoding is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province, with 4 cities (Dingzhou is a provincial direct management pilot), 5 districts, 15 counties (Xiongxian, Rongcheng, and Anxin counties are managed by Xiong'an New Area), and 2 development zones. It is one of the central cities in the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region and is known as the "Three Passes in the North, Nine Provinces in the South, a key area in the Ji Fu region, and the capital is Pinghan in the South". Baoding is located in the Golden Triangle of Beijing Tianjin Shijiazhuang, the strategic hinterland of Xiong'an New Area. The city center is 140 kilometers away from Beijing, 145 kilometers away from Tianjin, and 125 kilometers away from Shijiazhuang. It is at the forefront of the capital's political "moat". As of October 2022, the total area of the city is 19300 square kilometers (excluding Xiong'an New Area and Dingzhou). As of the end of 2022, the city's permanent population was 9.144 million.

The terrain of Baoding city slopes from northwest to southeast, and the landforms are divided into two categories: mountainous areas and plain plains; It belongs to the warm temperate continental monsoon climate with distinct four seasons. The rivers within Baoding City mainly belong to the Daqing River system in the Haihe River Basin; In 2019, Baoding was awarded the honorary title of "National Forest City". As of 2022, the city's gross domestic product has reached 388.03 billion yuan.

As of 2022, Baoding City has 68 secondary vocational education schools, 87 regular high schools, 330 regular junior high schools, 1579 primary schools, and 16 universities including North China Electric Power University and Hebei University; There are a total of 11455 medical and health institutions in the city, including 382 hospitals, 260 township health centers, 231 community health service centers (stations), 22 maternal and child health centers (institutes, stations), and 21 disease prevention and control centers.

In the late Tang Yu era of primitive society, present-day Baoding was divided into Jizhou and Youzhou; In the seventh year of the Tianhui reign of the Jin Dynasty (1129 AD), Baozhou was appointed as the military governor of Shuntian Army; In the eighth year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1669), the governor of Zhili was moved from Zhengding to Baoding, and Baoding became the capital of Zhili; During the War of Resistance Against Japan, the Japanese army occupied Baoding and established it as the headquarters of the Japanese puppet military and political leadership in Hebei Province; On November 22, 1948, Baoding was liberated and Baoding City was established; On August 1, 1949, the People's Government of Hebei Province was established, with Baoding as the provincial capital and Baoding City as a provincial administered city; In December 1994, Baoding area merged with Baoding city to become a provincial-level city.
