Tangshan, abbreviated as "Tang", is a prefecture level city in Hebei Province. It is the central city of the Beijing Tianjin Tangshan industrial base and the sub central city in the northeast of the Beijing Tianjin Hebei urban agglomeration. Located in the eastern part of Hebei Province, it faces Qinhuangdao City across the Luan River to the east, borders the Bohai Sea to the south, is adjacent to Beijing and Tianjin to the west, and is adjacent to Chengde City across the Great Wall by the Yanshan Mountains to the north. The total area is 13472 square kilometers. As of the end of 2019, Tangshan City governed 3 county-level cities, 4 counties, 7 districts, and 4 development zones. There are 45 townships, 132 towns, 5472 village committees, 54 street offices, and 725 neighborhood committees in the city. As of the end of 2022, the city's permanent population was 7.706 million people. In 2024, the GDP will reach 1000.39 billion yuan, making it the 27th city in China with a "trillion yuan GDP".

Tangshan belongs to the warm temperate semi humid monsoon climate. With diverse landforms and fertile soil, it is a rich production area for various agricultural and sideline products, known as the "Jingdong Treasure Land". Tangshan City has identified 49 types of mineral resources, of which nearly 30 have been developed and utilized. The sea area under the jurisdiction of Tangshan City is 4467 square kilometers. The forest area in Tangshan City is 500700 hectares. There are 17 orders, 52 families, and 347 species of wild birds in the city, including 13 species of national first-class protected birds such as red crowned cranes and Oriental white storks, and 55 species of national second-class protected birds. There are 23 nature reserves in Tangshan City.

As of the end of 2022, there are 13 regular higher education institutions in the city in terms of education; In terms of scientific research institutions, the city has 119 scientific and technological research and development platforms such as provincial key laboratories, technology innovation centers, and industrial technology research institutes; In terms of medical and health care, the city has 9365 various types of health institutions, including 272 hospitals, 190 township health centers, 181 community health institutions, and 5965 rural health clinics.

Tangshan was under the jurisdiction of Guzhu and Shanrong during the Shang Dynasty, Yan during the Warring States period, and Youzhou during the Han Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, it belonged to Pingzhou and Jizhou. In the Liao Dynasty, it belonged to Nanjing Road, Zhongdu Road, and Beijing Road. In the Yuan Dynasty, it belonged to Zhongshu Province, Dadu Road, and Yongping Road. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it belonged to Shuntian Prefecture, Yongping Prefecture, and Zunhua Prefecture. In the third year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1877), Qiaotun Town was established and later renamed Tangshan Town. In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the political district system was inherited from the Qing Dynasty. In 1929, Zhili Province was renamed Hebei Province. On January 28, 1939, the puppet Jidong Anti Communist Autonomous Government, in view of Tangshan's special economic and political status, issued a decree to establish a city in Tangshan, initially called the "Tangshan Municipal Government" and later renamed the "Tangshan Municipal Office". After Japan announced its surrender, the Nationalist Party stationed in Beiping sent personnel to take over the Japanese puppet regime and set up an Inspectorate Commissioner's Office
