Shaoxing, formerly known as Kuaiji, Shanyin, and Yuezhou, is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province. It is located in the central northern part of Zhejiang Province, on the south bank of Hangzhou Bay. It borders Ningbo City to the east, Taizhou City and Jinhua City to the south, Hangzhou City to the west, and Jiaxing City across the Qiantang River to the north. As of February 18, 2023, according to the official website, Shaoxing City has 49 towns, 7 townships, 47 streets, 1597 administrative villages, and 594 (community) residents' committees; The coastline of Shaoxing City is 40 kilometers long, with a total land area of 8279.08 square kilometers as of 2022. The entire city of Shaoxing is located at the junction of three major geomorphic units: the hills and mountains of western Zhejiang, the hills and mountains of eastern Zhejiang, and the plains of northern Zhejiang. The terrain is high in the south and low in the north, forming a geomorphic feature surrounded by mountains, contained in basins, and concentrated in plains. The terrain skeleton is in the shape of a "mountain". Shaoxing belongs to the subtropical monsoon climate, warm and humid, with distinct four seasons. Shaoxing has a history of about 9000 years since the beginning of the Little Mount Huangshan Culture in the middle of the Neolithic Age. In the second year of Yongchu in the Southern Song Dynasty (421), Kuaiji Commandery was re established and Dongyangzhou was established. In February of the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the old system of prefectures, states, and departments was abolished, and a two-level system of provinces and counties was implemented. In May 1949, the entire territory of Shaoxing was liberated. In June, it was designated as the tenth specialized school in Zhejiang Province. In September 1964, the Shaoxing Special Zone was re established. In May 1968, it was renamed as Shaoxing Prefecture. In July 1983, Shaoxing Prefecture was abolished and replaced with Shaoxing City under provincial jurisdiction.
It has tourist attractions such as Huancheng River and Xianglu Peak. It also frequently holds major festivals such as the Lu Xun Culture and Art Festival and the China Lanting Calligraphy Festival
