Shanwei City, a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, is located in the southeast coast of Guangdong Province, in the south of Lianhua Mountain, on the east bank of the the Pearl River Delta, near the South China Sea to the south, separated from Taiwan Province by water, with a total area of 4865.05 square kilometers. The coastline along the mainland is 455.2 kilometers long, accounting for 11.1% of the total coastline length in the province. The sea area within the continental shelf (i.e. within 200 meters of water depth) is 23900 square kilometers, equivalent to 4.5 times the land area. The urban area of Shanwei City is located within the scope of the "Shenzhen metropolitan area" redefined in the 2021 Guangdong Province's "14th Five Year Plan". By the end of 2023, the city's permanent population will be 2.6913 million.
In the sixth year of Xianhe in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (331 AD), Haifeng County was established. In the eleventh year of the Kaihuang reign (591 AD), it belonged to Xunzhou. Ming and Qing dynasties, Huizhou Prefecture. In January 1956, it was under the jurisdiction of Huiyang Special Zone; On March 22, 1959, it was transferred to the Shantou Special Zone; On December 22, 1983, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Huiyang area; In 1988, Shanwei City was established.
As of October 2022, Shanwei City has jurisdiction over one municipal district, two counties, and manages one county-level city. Shanwei City is one of the 13 red revolutionary base areas in China, the birthplace of China's first Soviet regime, and the only comprehensive revolutionary old area in Guangdong. All four counties (cities, districts) in the city are first-class revolutionary old area counties; Shanwei is backed by mountains and facing the sea, intersecting and integrating Minnan culture, Chaoshan culture, Hakka culture, and Guangfu culture, forming a distinct "Hailufeng culture" geographically and culturally. Local traditional dramas include Zhengzi Opera, Xiqin Opera, and Baizi Opera. It gave birth to famous figures such as Peng Pai, Xie Fei, Chen Jiongming, Chen Qiyou, Huang Dingchen, Ma Sicong, Zhong Jingwen, Yang Chengzhi, Ke Lin, Peng Shilu, and Huang Xuhua. Shanwei City has Pinqing Lake, the largest coastal lagoon in Chinese Mainland, "Eight Scenes of Shanwei", such as Red Square Spark, Xuanwu Spirit Sound, Phoenix Coming, Wave Shielding Wonder, Jinxiang Silver Beach, Lianfeng Pincui, Wupo Zhengqi, Nanwanhuitao, etc.
In 2023, Shanwei City achieved a regional GDP of 143.084 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.0%
