Kunming, also known as Chuncheng, is the capital of Yunnan Province and the central city of the Yunnan Central Urban Agglomeration. It has been approved by the State Council as one of the important central cities in western China. As of 2019, the city has 7 districts, 3 counties, 1 county-level city, and 3 autonomous counties under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 21473 square kilometers, a built-up area of 483.52 square kilometers, a permanent population of 6.95 million, an urban population of 5.1152 million, and an urbanization rate of 73.6%.
Kunming is located in the southwest of China and the middle of the the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. It has a unique location of "connecting Guizhou, Guangxi and the coastal areas in the east, entering the Central Plains through Sichuan and Chongqing in the north, reaching Thailand and Cambodia in the south, and connecting Myanmar with India and Pakistan in the west". It is at the intersection of the north-south international corridor and the third east-west Eurasian land bridge starting from Shenzhen. It is a gateway city open to Southeast Asia and South Asia, and at the intersection of the ASEAN "10+1" Free Trade Area Economic Circle, the Greater Mekong Subregional Economic Cooperation Circle, and the Pan Pearl River Delta Regional Economic Cooperation Circle.
Kunming is a national historical and cultural city, where humans have been living and reproducing around Dianchi Lake as early as 30000 years ago; The Dian Kingdom was established in 278 BC and its capital was established here; In 765, Nanzhao Kingdom established the Tuodong City, marking the beginning of the construction of Kunming city; In the late Ming Dynasty, the Yongli regime of the Southern Ming Dynasty established its capital in Kunming. Kunming belongs to the northern subtropical low latitude plateau mountainous monsoon climate, with a mountainous terrain surrounded by mountains on three sides and bordered by Dianchi Lake to the south. The scenery along the lake is beautiful, and due to its location on the low latitude plateau, it has formed a climate of "spring like all seasons" and enjoys the reputation of "spring city".
The Kunming Import and Export Fair, China International Tourism Fair, and Kunming International Tourism Festival have made Kunming one of the major exhibition cities in China. The best commercial city in Chinese Mainland ranked 23rd in 2018, and the national health city (district) was reconfirmed. In December 2019, the National Ethnic Affairs Commission named Kunming as a "National Model City for Ethnic Unity and Progress".
