Shantou, located at the southern end of the Hanjiang River Delta in eastern Guangdong Province, China, borders the South China Sea to the southeast. It is one of the earliest economic special zones established in China and an important node city on the 21st century Maritime Silk Road. It is known as the "gateway to the east and the hub of southern China".
Established by the port and prospered by overseas Chinese, Shantou officially opened for trade in 1860 and is one of the earliest ports in modern China to open to the outside world. As a globally renowned hometown of overseas Chinese, over 5 million Teochew Chinese are distributed in more than 100 countries and regions around the world, leaving behind the famous saying 'wherever there is a tide, there are tide people'. The Shantou Overseas Chinese Archive has been included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, and is a precious cultural heritage that carries the patriotism of overseas Chinese.
Nowadays, Shantou is an excellent tourist city in China, with a century old arcade that gathers Chinese and Western architectural cultures in a well preserved small park opening area. Nanao Island, the only island county in Guangdong, has stunning coastal scenery; The vitality of intangible cultural heritage such as English songs and dances, Chaozhou opera, and the Chaozhou Shantou cuisine composed of beef hotpot, raw pickles, and Gongfu tea are renowned worldwide. The full completion of the Shantou Shantou high-speed railway has integrated Shantou into the "90 minute economic circle" of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, welcoming global visitors with an open and inclusive attitude, and working together to create development opportunities.
