Wenzhou is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province, located in the eastern region of China, southeast of Zhejiang, on the south bank of the lower reaches of the Ou River. It borders the East China Sea to the east, Fujian Province to the south, Lishui to the west and northwest, and Taizhou to the north and northeast. It is one of the 27 cities in the central area of the Yangtze River Delta. The terrain within the area slopes in a trapezoidal shape from southwest to northeast. It is a subtropical monsoon climate zone with significant alternation between winter and summer monsoons. The eastern coastal continental shelf basin is rich in oil and natural gas resources, and non-metallic mineral resources include alum, granite, quartz, etc. As of the end of 2022, Wenzhou City has a land area of 12102.65 square kilometers and a sea area of 8649 square kilometers, with jurisdiction over 4 districts, 3 cities (county-level), and 5 counties; In the same year, the city achieved a regional gross domestic product (GDP) of 802.98 billion yuan. Famous universities in Wenzhou include Wenzhou University, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou Business School, etc. As of 2022, there are 39 types of secondary vocational education schools, 101 ordinary high schools, and 11 ordinary universities in the city. There are a total of 5994 medical and health institutions in the city, including 164 hospitals.
In 192 BC, Wenzhou was the capital of Prince Taiyao of Dongou. In 323 AD, the county was established as Yongjia County. Legend has it that during the construction of the county city, a white deer carrying flowers surrounded the city, hence the name Lucheng. It was first called Wenzhou in 675 AD. On May 7th, 1949, Wenzhou was peacefully liberated and Wenzhou City was established. In September 1981, the Wenzhou region and Wenzhou city merged to establish Wenzhou city, implementing a city managed county system. 265.6 kilometers of urban roads have been newly renovated, 100 dead end roads have been opened, and BRT has basically formed a ring network.
As of August 2022, there are currently 80 A-level tourist attractions, 6 provincial-level comprehensive tourism demonstration counties (cities, districts), 4 national red tourism classic scenic spots, and 230 3A level scenic villages in Zhejiang Province.
