Description • Operator: Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO)
• Constructor: Kajima
• Reactors operational:
1 × 460 MW (Unit 1)
4 × 784 MW (Units 2, 3, 4 and 5)
1 × 1,100 MW (Unit 6)
• The plant was severely affected after the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, 2011.
Due to cutting of electricity, cooling pumps failed and the fuel pool temperature rose in the units, causing hydrogen explosions that destroyed the upper cladding of the building housing in reactors 1 and 3, damage in the containment of reactor 2 and a severe fire in reactor 4.
