- Originally constructed as a custom house for Dublin Port, the building now houses Ireland's Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
- Hoping to disrupt British operations in Ireland during the Anglo-Irish War, the Irish Republican Army set the building on fire in 1921, completely gutting the interior and destroying the dome. The building was fully restored by 1928.
