Description
Germany's first offshore lighthouse, in service until 1964. Leuchtturm Roter sand belongs to Germany's best known lighthouses shown on postcards and stamps from German Post (Deutsche Post €0.55).

Tower was planned in 1878. First trialof erection in 1881 failed as caisson, on which it should be erected was destroyed on October 13th, 1881 during a storm.

Second attempt in 1883 was successful.

Tower is today not in use anymore. It is just a monument.

Leuchtturm Roter Sand is situated approximately 7 kilometres northeast of Wangerooge at 53° 51' 18" N, 8° 04' 54" E.
