Built as the largest church in the state, Centenary United Methodist was designed as a 2,500 seat cruciform church for a merged West End Methodist Church and Centenary Methodist Church. The design employs medieval themes, such as high stepped buttresses carrying blind arches over narrow windows. The interior features 68 foot tall stone pillars and tile vaulting by Rafael Gustavino Jr. The Great Depression threatened the project until the Hanes family provided the money needed to finish the church. A statue of John Wesley can be found in the Narthex and high detail carving and paint work can be found throughout the church. The stained glass is hand-blown English antique glass by George Cooper Abbs. The church has 150 choir members and an Austin Organ.
