- This bridge spans the Rio Tejo (Targus River) between Montijo (left bank), and Sacavém (right bank).
- The bridge, opened to traffic on March 29, 1998, became the longest bridge in Europe upon its completion.
- At a total length of 17.2 kilometers, this bridge was built to alleviate traffic on the 25 de Abril Bridge.
- The bridge travels through Estuário do Tejo, a natural park, home to many species of aquatic birds.
- The bridge is named after famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, and was completed to commemorate the 500 year aniversary of his voyage to India.
- The center span is cable-stayed, while the approach spans are concrete, box girder spans, which were constructed using the balance cantilever method.
