• Oostkerk (East Church) is Middelburg's first Baroque-styled buildings, and one of the most outstanding examples of that architectural style.
• The building is an octagonal domed church in Middelburg from the years 1664-1667. It was the first major church in the city after the Reformation, especially for the Reformed church was built. This makes it one of the most important examples of the early Protestant church in the Netherlands.
• Like many Protestant churches is the one central Ooskerk. It stands on an octagonal plan and is controlled by a cupola with a lantern finished. With its rich ornamentation, the building is in opposition to the Calvinist construction period. But since Middelburg was a rich city, which should include representation of the new church to meet needs.
• In 1644, the first plans to build in the new neighborhoods in the east of the town house of God for the Dutch Reformed Church. They brought suggestions for other Protestant churches in Holland. There should be a central octagonal dome with arise. This had 17 houses to be expropriated. On the financing structure of the city raised a supplementary on wine and beer.
• The church was started in 1648 according to the designs of the architect Bartholomew Drijfhout and Pieter Post. Although Grave Aart van Sande led the construction from 1651 continued after Drijfhout had died. Also Grave Sande died before completion of the church. The city architect Louis Jolyt took over the work and the building was completed in 1667, inaugurated in July 1667.
• The organ dominates the northwest side of the interior. Below is centrally located, the pulpit and the altar. The organ was built by the brothers Peter and John de Rijckere. After many objections and amendments, it was since 1783 in operation.
