Description - The Emley Moor TV Tower weighs 11200 tonnes starting from a base diameter of 24.4 metres and tapering to 6.5m at the Operations Platform. The wall thickness is 560mm or 22".
- It is the tallest structure in the UK and is the third tower to stand at this site. The first was a 135.6m (445') steel tower erected in 1956. Only a few years later, a new 385.6m (1,265') steel tower was erected to further the reception limits. However this tower was prone to dangerous accumulations of ice and, on March 19, 1969, the tower collapsed. Years of legal conflagration ensued, but ultimately an out-of-court settlement was reached in 1983.
- Though some resistance to building a new tower was initially encountered because of its proximity to inhabited areas, the ideal location for a broadcast tower remained at this site. The permanent tower was built during 1969/1970 (replacing a series of temporary towers) using a reinforced concrete shell.
- From a distance it resembles the much taller CN Tower in Toronto, Canada.
