Viru Keskus, located at Viru väljak 6 in Tallinn, is a high-density, multifunctional "city within a city" comprising 11 functional levels and a gross area of approximately 75,000 sqm.
Originally developed by AS Viru Keskus (Kapitel & Tristone) and built by Merko Ehitus, the complex opened on April 15, 2004, under a design by architects Vilen Künnapu and Ain Padrik. The structural heart of the building is a massive, multi story central atrium featuring panoramic glass lifts and criss crossing escalators that visually connect the retail zones to the integrated 1972 Original Sokos Hotel Viru "skyscraper". The complex is physically linked to the main Tallinna Kaubamaja department store and Hotel viru via two prominent glass enclosed skywalks (bridge galleries) that span Ants Laikmaa street and over parking garage. Strategically positioned at the main pedestrian entrance stands the iconic 5 meter tall bronze sculpture titled "Hämarik" (Twilight), created by artist Mare Mikoff in 2004 to represent the Estonian myth of sunset and balance the building’s masculine architecture.
The 11 floor vertical layout is organized as follows: Level -1 (Underground) houses the Tallinn City Bus Terminal, a subterranean hub with 6 platforms serving 14 main routes and over 850 daily departures. Level 0 contains the Kaubamaja Toidumaailm gourmet food hall and essential services like a pharmacy. Level 1 (Street Level) serves as the primary social hub with the 15-restaurant "Food Street," high-street retail, and the hotel lobby entrance. Level 2 (Retail) hosts fashion boutiques and provides access to the two skywalk bridges. Level 3 (Culture/Parking) features the world-renowned Rahva Raamat bookstore and the first deck of the 395 space parking garage (P3). Level 4 (Wellness/Parking) houses the Ilusfäär beauty zone, the second parking deck (P4) with the Viru VooluRing EV charging hub, and the base of the residential tower. Level 5 (Rooftop) is a leisure terrace featuring a MyFitness flagship club with an outdoor 110 meter running track, Padel Company courts, and the PARK'la entertainment zone. Levels 6 through 11 comprise the Viru Residence, a residential tower section containing luxury private apartments and premium suites with floor-to-ceiling glass facades overlooking the Old Town and the sea. Technically, the building is a sustainability leader, holding the LEED O&M Platinum certificate and utilizing the R8 Jenny AI system to manage 40,000 sensors for energy optimization. A €20 million renovation in 2023 by Swedish firm Wingårdhs and Estonian firm 3+1 Architects modernized the interior with world unique vertical plant columns and recycled marble flooring, solidifying its status as Estonia's most visited urban hub.
