Description • The medical center commands the largest rural health care system in the nation and covers a 20,000 square mile area in northern and central Pennsylvania. The hospital serves more than two million people in 31 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. Of those 31 counties, 29 are classified as rural.
• Original structure dates to 1915. Many additions to the complex have occured since then. Most recently, the Janet Weis Women’s and Children’s Hospital was built in 1995.
