A nine-story wing was added along 13th Avenue in 1928. The Penn Alto Hotel was sponsored by the newly-formed Chamber of Commerce as an attempt to attract convention business and diversify the local economy. The design is typical of similar buildings in cities across the country, and is symbolic of the civic spirit of the times. The Penn Alto Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
