Description Architect: Princess Suiko and Crown Prince Shotoku
This building, along with 3 others in the Horyuji complex (Kondo, central gate, and precinct corridor) are believed to be the oldest, intact wooden buildings in the world, constructed in the Asuka Period at the very beginning of Japan's recorded history.
It was originally constructed in 607 AD, but was supposedly destroyed by fire around 680 AD. There is however some doubt as to whether this fire actually occurred, in which case the pagoda is actually over 100 years older.
