- The northern/eastern third of the building was constructed in 1910 as the furniture store of the Marcus Clark & Company. This section has a wood frame.
- The building was expanded with a steel-framed towered section in 1928 designed by Spain & Cosh to house all of the companies operation as well as additional retail space.
- The Sydney Institute of Technology (now TAFE NSW) took over the building for classroom space in 1966, and over the proceeding decades was renovated and refurbished to bring it up to modern standards.
