Description A uniquely spiral minaret was built to accompany what was then the world's largests mosques.
This mosque was commissioned by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Muttawakkil as part of the new city of Samarra, built especially to serve as the capital of the caliphate. The mosque stands about 25 meters away from the minaret and covers an area roughly equivalent to 10 football fields.
Today only the minaret stands in its former glory, the mosque and the rest of the city long since abandoned and decayed to walls and foundations.
