Description
Named for the long-serving state Senator, the Claiborne Pell Bridge connects Conanicut Island (Jamestown area) and Rhode Island (Newport area) along Route 138.

This four-lane structure spans a total of 3.4 km (11,250 ft) including the two approach spans at either end. The suspension span comprises 210m (687 ft) end spans and a 488 m (687 ft) centre span. The navigational clearance at the centre is approx. 63m (206 ft) - sufficient for Naval traffic. The two 0.38m (15") diameter cables are made from 76 strands each having 61 wires.

The structure opened in June 1969 at a cost of $55 Million dollars.
